RM SAYS EDUCATION IS KEY BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD – BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL DECEMBER 28, 2009 The Upper East Regional minister, Honourable Mark Owen Woyongo has stated that government is committed to delivering quality education to all its citizenry especially those in rural areas as a sure way of reducing poverty. Government’s plan is to address the challenges in management, structure and content of education. The regional minister stated this in a keynote address at Nayagenia in the Kassena-Nankana East district during a homecoming ceremony of the Nayagenia Development Association [NDA]. He said government will continue to upgrade and rehabilitate school facilities including water and sanitation facilities and other essential services that will promote teaching and learning. CNC CALLS FOR CO-EXISTENCE 22/12/09 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Upper East Regional director of the Centre for National Culture [CNC], Naa Luciano M. Tungbani has called on people in the Upper East region to co-exist and tolerate one another saying many decades ago, people with diverse ethnic backgrounds have lived together without conflicts ensuing between them because they tolerated one another without any resentment and prejudice. The CNC director made the call in a welcome address at the launch of a peace project dubbed the sustainable peace initiative project for the Upper East region under the theme “Unity in Ethnic Diversity for the Total Development of Upper East region”. The peace initiative project seeks to use music and drama to resolve conflicts in the three regions of the north. NAARA RURAL BANK HOLDS 19TH AGM BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLAGATANGA MUNICIPAL December 19, 2009 The Naara Rural Bank Limited, a rural bank operating in the Upper East region made a net profit after tax of 133,904.85 Ghana Cedis in 2008 as against 77,881.66 Ghana Cedis in 2007. Meanwhile, the bank’s total income stood at 363,932.45 Ghanaian Cedis in year 2007 while the figure appreciated upwards to 597,253.69 in 2008. These were contained in an audit report presented by Kufuor and Associates, external auditors of the Naara Rural Bank during the bank’s 19th Annual General Meeting [AGM] held at Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana East district. The auditors noted that the bank operated in conformity with the banking act of 2004, Act 673 while the financial statements of the bank were also prepared in line with Ghana’s laid down accounting standards. BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM I S D – BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL 15/12/2009 The government of Ghana through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture [MOFA] has presented 600 sheep including the Djallonke and West Africa Dwarf breed of goats to livestock farmers in the Talensi-Nabdam and Builsa districts of the Upper East region. A Deputy Minister of MOFA in charge of livestock, Dr. Albert Tia Sugri who launched a scheme dubbed the credit-in-kind scheme at Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West district said the presentation formed part of a national package under the ministry’s Livestock Development Project [LDP]. Dr. Tia who is also the Member of Parliament for the Nalerigu-Gambaga constituency said under the LDP, small scale farmers are being provided with small ruminants as credit-in-kind to help them increase livestock products such as meat for local consumption and at the same time, reduce meat imports into the country. MODERNISE AGRICULTURE FOR FOOD SECURITY 04/12/2009 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA The Kassena –Nankana East District Chief Executive, Honourable Emmanuel Andema has observed that modernised agriculture can lead to accelerated rural development in Ghana. Hon Andema made this observation in a welcome address at this year’s Upper East Regional farmers’ day celebration held in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East District. He said Ghana’s rural economy can be transformed through agro-based industrialisation and concentrating investment in areas with high agricultural potential. He said government has initiated measures to help farmers increase their yield and these include the importation of modern farm equipment, the subsidy on fertilizer and many other interventions ear-marked under the Northern Rural Growth Programme and the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority [SADA]. KNOW YOUR STATUS EARLY, LIVE LONG BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL This year’s World AIDS Day has been observed at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region with a call on all people to test early to know their HIV/AIDS status in order to begin treatment early to prolong their lives. The president of NAP+, an association of persons leaving with AIDS [PLWAs] in the Upper East region, Madam Teni Ayupwaadu made the call in a statement to a gathering at the launch of world AIDS day. Madam Ayupwaadu said she was glad to know her status early because ever since she discovered her positive status, she has been on antiretroviral treatment which has kept her healthy and strong all the while. She called on spouses to share their status with their partners instead of secretly spreading the disease to them. She also advised school children to desist from premarital sex while advising those of age to use condom if they are not able to resist the temptation to have sex. Upper East Regional
