NAVASCO MARKS 50TH ANNIVERSARY BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM March 20, 2010 ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Navrongo Senior High School popularly known as NAVASCO in 2009 registered 391 candidates for that year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Exam out of which 221 qualified to enter tertiary institutions with a best aggregate of seven. The headmaster of NAVASCO, Mr. Patrick Tangonyire made this known in a welcome address at the official launch of the 50th anniversary of the school in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district in the Upper East region. Mr. Tangonyire said the purpose of the launch is to make public the 50th anniversary celebrations and to solicit support from government, businesses, NGOs, the Parent-Teacher Association [PTA] and other stakeholders to undertake infrastructural projects. UPPER EAST AND BF DISCUSS USE OF VOLTA BASIN BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL March 16, 2010 The first general assembly meeting of the trans-boundary management committee of the White Volta Basin has been held at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region. The assembly comprises members from Burkina Faso and the Upper East region of Ghana who constantly rely on the water resources of the White Volta for their livelihood. The overall objective of the assembly is to ensure sustainable utilization of water resources of the White Volta basin. The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo in a welcome address at the function commended the International Union for Conservation of Nature for helping to motivate countries with interest in the White Volta Basin to constantly meet for discussions while mobilizing support for the improved management of shared water resources. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF UPPER EAST REGION LAUNCHED March 05, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The official launch of the 50th Anniversary of the Upper East Region has taken place at Bolgatanga, capital of the region with the unveiling of a website christened www.uppereastregionghana.com which is aimed at marketing the region to the outside world and attracting investors to propel the development of the region. The Upper East Region was begotten from the Northern Region in September 1960 and it in turn gave birth to the Upper West Region in 1983. Since its creation, a total of 25 political appointees have headed the administration of the Upper East region either as regional chief executives, regional commissioners or regional ministers depending on the regime that was in power. CSM OUTBREAK, DON’T SELF-MEDICATE March 01, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD- BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Minister of Health Doctor Benjamin Kumbuor, has advised the public against administering drugs on their own in the treatment of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis [CSM] saying they should rather report immediately to the nearest health facility for proper diagnosis and treatment whenever signs of the disease occur including severe headache, stiffness in the neck and waist pains. The minister gave this advice at the close of a day’s working visit to the Upper East region following reports of CSM outbreak more especially a new strain of the disease, the W135. The minister visited the Navrongo Health Research Centre, the War Memorial Hospital also in Navrongo and other health facilities in the region to have first-hand information about the CSM situation in the region. STUDENTS TO RECEIVE 11,799 PIECES OF SCHOOL UNIFORM March 06, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL Basic school pupils in the Upper East Region are to receive 11,799 pieces of school uniform and 300,000 exercise books in the next few weeks under government’s policy of free distribution of school uniform and exercise books to students across the country. The Acting Upper East regional director of Education, Mrs. Agnes Atagabe disclosed this in a welcome address at an independence day parade to mark Ghana’s 53rd anniversary after freeing itself from colonial rule. She commended government for increasing the Capitation Grant to basic schools and also increasing the number of schools under the Ghana School Feeding Programme in the region to 54.
