ESSENTIAL MEDICINES MUST BE ACCESSIBLE, NGO September 22, 2010 BY P. A WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A not-for-profit organisation, Medicine Transparency Alliance [META] in collaboration with the Integrated Social Development Centre has held a sensitisation forum for a cross section of stakeholders to solicit their views and suggestions to enhance its work. META as a civil society organisation seeks to ensure that the general public especially the core poor have access to essential medicines in a transparent manner. The British Department for International Development is the main financier of META’s activities. A representative of META, Mr. Ralph Ahiabu in a presentation at the forum observed that medicines are generally various and are used for different reasons. Therefore the procurement process for medicines should therefore be transparent and accessible to all so that no one person can monopolise the sale and distribution of such essential medicines. ITERIM COUNCILS FOR GBEWAA AND BOSCO October 15, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Upper East regional minister Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, has inaugurated two interim governing councils for both the Gbewaa and St. John Bosco’s Colleges of Education at a brief inaugural ceremony at the residency in Bolgatanga with a call on council members to work hard in helping the colleges to reverse falling standards in education. The regional minister noted that the education reform review committee did indicate government’s resolve to improve teacher education in Ghana and this started with the upgrading of all the 38 teacher training colleges to tertiary status. President Atta Mills has therefore directed that interim governing councils be constituted to fill the managerial vacuum and to enable the colleges to function efficiently. INFO. MINISTER, JOHN TIA TOURS UE October 25, 2010 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Honourable Minister of Information who is also the Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency, Mr. John Tia Akolgo is in the Upper East region for a three day working visit to departments and agencies under his ministry. He will also interact with traditional rulers, assembly persons and heads of decentralised departments. The essence of the visit is for the minister to communicate government policies and programmes such as the free school uniform to basic school pupils, enhanced capitation grant, subsidy on fertilizer, improved agriculture and other laudable interventions by government and in return, get feedback from implementing authorities.
