CATTLE DEALERS CALL FOR ONE-STOP PAYMENT SYSTEM December 16, 2011 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL Cattle dealers in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region have presented a petition to the Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo asking him to use his office to effect positive changes in the cattle business environment in order to enhance the growth and expansion of the cattle trade. One such change is for the regional minister to push for the introduction of a one-stop payment system for the cattle business where cattle dealers will pay for all levies regarding the trade and be issued receipts which will then be tendered at any check point by officials. This, the cattle dealers believe will spare them numerous unnecessary checks, delays and extortion by some Police and Customs, Excise and Preventive Services, CEPS officers. DEPUTY EDUCATION MINISTER INTERACTS WITH STAKEHOLDERS 12th December, 2011 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Deputy Minister for Education, Mr. Mahama Ayariga has proposed an additional two hours of tuition to the regular duration of contact hours for Junior High Schools [JHS] and six hours extra tuition on Saturdays as one sure way of improving performance of especially JHS form three students in the Basic Education Certificate Exams [BECE]. He also proposed that the chief examiner’s report and marking scheme be made available to all schools for the sensitisation of teachers who handle candidates for the BECE. Mr. Ayariga made these proposals at separate meetings with JHS form three students, their head teachers and district education oversight committees at the Bolgatanga Municipality, Talensi-Nabdam and Bongo Districts in the Upper East Region. He will hold similar meetings with stakeholders in the Builsa, Kassena-Nankana East and West, Garu-Tempane and Bawk

UPPER EAST TOMATO FARMERS CRY FOR IMPROVED SEEDS December 07, 2011 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Tomato Producers Association of Nyariga [TOPAN] in the Upper East Region has made a passionate appeal to government to as a matter of urgency introduce a national seed strategy that provides farmers with a reliable source of appropriate seeds and technical support in order for them to be able to cultivate the crop all year round. An advocate for TOPAN, Honurable John Akaribo made the call on behalf of the tomato farmers at press conference in Bolgatanga to present the results of a research carried out by the association in the Pwalugu, Tono and Vea Irrigation project areas in the Upper East. Meanwhile, research institutions and Tomato fields in Akumadan and Tuoboudom in the Brong-Ahafo region were also covered under the research.
