The Minister for Education, Honourable Alex Tettey-Enyo has stated that government recognises the contribution of the Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School to the human resource development of Ghana and urged staff of the school to sustain the high standard of teaching and discipline. He also advised students of the school to distant themselves from hard drugs, cyber fraud and other social vices that can jeopardize their lives and academic work.

The Education Minister gave the advice in an address at a grand durbar to climax the golden jubilee celebrations of Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district. He said in line with government’s commitment to improve upon infrastructure in the school, all ongoing projects will be completed whilst additional facilities will be provided.

Hon. Tettey-Enyo who is also the Member of Parliament for Ada further said government has taken note of challenges facing Notre Dame and thus on behalf of the Vice President, H.E John Dramani Mahama pledged to provide the school with a bus and a pick-up vehicle to facilitate teaching and learning but entreated users of the school’s facilities to be responsible and ensure regular maintenance.

He observed that education is key in the National Democratic Congress government’s policy of investing in people adding that ¨ the NDC government will ensure a massive increase in access to facilities for computer technology in the teaching and learning process at all levels in the coming year” while placing great importance on technical and vocational education.

The Rector of Notre Dame, Rev. Father Francis Kudelogo in his welcome address revealed that the school was established in September 1960 by Catholic missionaries at the time to offer quality education to less fortunate boys who otherwise could not have afforded the price of education elsewhere.

Touching on the theme for the golden jubilee “Notre Dame @ 50: the citadel of quality education in Northern Ghana”, Reverend Father Kudelogo said Notre Dame is an outstanding senior high school rooted in the Catholic faith but which provides holistic education to all from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds. He thanked collaborators of the school including the Navro Pio, the Ghana Education Service, the Catholic Church and others for their support through the ages.

The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo who also addressed the celebrants said government is focused on implementing the education strategic plan that identifies new areas for acceleration, effectiveness and efficiency in education delivery to students across the country. This strategic plan the minister added, will further address challenges in management, structure and content of education.

Mr. Woyongo, who is also old boy of Notre Dame noted that the four year senior high school duration introduced by the previous administration has brought enormous challenges to second cycle schools. To address these challenges therefore, the Mills’ administration has embarked on massive infrastructural provision for all senior high schools. He disclosed that in the Upper East region alone, 9 number of 6-unit classroom blocks and 8 number of dormitory blocks and kitchen cum dinning halls costing 11,310,430.63 Ghana Cedis are under construction with some almost completed.

The minister disclosed that Notre Dame in particular has benefited from an 800-seater assembly hall, 6-unit block of flats for tutors, a 6-unit class room and furniture. On teacher motivation, Mr. Woyongo said government is poised on ensuring that salaries of teachers are competitive and comparable to other professionals as will be captured on the Single Spine Salary Structure.

The regional recalled that a few months ago, five senior high schools including a technical institute in the region went on rampage destroying school property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis and halting academic work in the process. Mr. Woyongo thus praised Notre Dame students for being well-behaved and admonished other students against using demonstrations as the ultimate means to seeking redress for their grievances. He also called on school authorities to run open door administration and be transparent in their dealings so as to forestall suspicion and doubts among students and staff.

Some personalities including the Navro Pio Kwara Kadatua, Missionaries of Africa and the Upper East regional, Mr. mark Owen Woyongo who have assisted Notre Dame in various areas were presented awards.
