A total of 289 students comprising 79 females and 210 males have matriculated at the St. John Boscos College of Education in Navrongo in the Upper East region. The 289 teacher trainees were among a total of 750 applications that were received by the college. The matriculation ceremony certifies the admission of these freshers into the 2010/2011 academic year to pursue a three-year Diploma in Basic Education programme.

The Principal of the St. John Boscos College of Education, Mr. Alfred Abugre Ndago in his address to the matriculants noted that every academic year, there have been instances of a backlog of candidates who fail to secure admission into the college as a result of high numbers of applicants which the school’s quota is unable to accommodate.

Over the past three academic years, several hundreds of applicants could not gain admission to the college. In the 2007/2008 academic year for instance, only 280 out of 1,430 applicants were given admissions while in the 2008/2009 academic year, 280 gained admissions out of a total of 900 applicants. Meanwhile out of 820 applications for admission into the 2009/2010 academic year, only 291 candidates were considered.

Mr. Ndago therefore urged the fresh students to view their admission as a rare opportunity in their efforts to achieve higher education and work hard at their studies to ensure that they stay on the programme. According to him, they can only do this by passing the examinations, paying the prescribed school fees, maintaining good character and obtaining the required level of class attendance.

The principal’s advice to the teacher trainees is “as trainees of the college, you have freedoms and liberties but these are within the limits of the Code of Discipline for trainees in Colleges of Education”.

Mr. Ndago also observed that the non-passing of the Colleges of Education Bill into law is among many factors that adversely affect effective teaching and learning at the Colleges of Education and called on government and authorities in the education sector to ensure that the bill is passed without any further delays. Other problems he noted are, the absence of substantive governing councils for the colleges while students of the colleges do not benefit from certain facilities that are available to their colleagues in other educational institutions of the same status.

A Senior Hall Tutor of the Boscos College of Education, Mr. Atindana William Anamoo earlier in a welcome address disclosed that the 289 students for the 2010/2011 academic year have been categorised into three classes to pursue Mathematics and Science programmes, Mathematics and Technical programmes and General Arts.

Staff of the Kassena-Nankana GES office, executives of the teachers association-GNAT and the Administrator of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese of the Catholic Church, Monsignor Thomas Anamoo graced the occasion.
