The Minister for Information, Honourable John Tia Akologu has handed over a vocational school block to the Talensi-Nabdam district directorate of education for the commencement of academic work. The school, situated at Duusi in the Nabdam constituency was constructed at the cost of 140,000.oo Ghana Cedis.

At a ceremony to hand over the school, Hon. Tia Akologu said he had to pull resources from the Ghana Education Trust Fund and his share of the Common Fund to execute the project for his constituents. He said the Duusi Vocational Institute will provide an alternative source of livelihood to many rural students in the Talensi constituency and elsewhere who often fail to make excellent grades at the basic education and senior high school examinations.

According to him, the entire Duusi community will benefit from the school as indirect beneficiaries such as woman will sell provisions to students of the school while private developers may also profit from the provision of hostel services. He however, cautioned businesses and the community not to interfere with the administration of the school.

Hon. Tia Akologu who is also the Member of Parliament for the Talensi constituency reiterated the resolve of the Mills’ administration to provide adequate infrastructure for youth development through education adding that, President Atta Mills has actualised this by breaking ground for the construction of a modern health and allied sciences university in the Volta Region.

The Duusi Vocational Institute he disclosed will begin academic work with courses including block and concreting, plumbing, basic electricals, fashion and design while in future, more will be added to the course outline. Hon. Tia thanked the Tindanas for the ready release of land for the project and pledged that he will secure more funds to fence the school’s land in order to protect it from encroachers.

Mr. Tia Akologu appealed to non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to assist him to expand the school and stock it with modern equipment for the training of more youth who will then create jobs for themselves and their colleagues on completion. The school is made up of six classrooms, a staff common room, a library, office and store and it is hooked to the national grid.
