The 2011 Upper East regional inter-schools sports festival has formally opened at the Bawku Senior High School with a call on sportsmen and women to eschew indiscipline and always listen attentively to counsel from their instructors.
This year’s event dubbed the “inter-schools Milo and Akomisnaba Memorial Championship” is featuring about 20 second cycle institutions across the region and is being sponsored by Nestle Ghana Limited.
The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo who opened the sports festival in a speech read on his behalf noted that a major canker that derails sports administration and trainers over the world is the growing indiscipline among sportsmen and women. He therefore advised competitors in the various events to be of good behavior, play by the rules of all the games and be obedient to event officials.
Mr. Woyongo observed that in the contemporary world, sports should be viewed as a business that deserves hard work and peculiar attention like in any other endeavours. More so, sporting activities ought to be retained on the academic calendar as they allow students to improve body flexibility and maintain cardiovascular fitness through exercising and also make them achieve greater work efficiency.
The regional minister further noted that regular exercise and sporting activities reduce mental tension and stress in humans and improve quality of life. He pledged that the regional coordinating council will work with all the district and municipal assemblies to meet the sports development needs of the region in order for the youth to access the right sporting facilities and equipment for sports development.
Mr. Woyongo however admonished students against demonstrations which often result in wanton destruction of school property leaving behind huge repair and reconstruction bills for their parents and government to settle.
The Acting Director of education for the Bawku Municipality, Mr. Emmanuel Zumakpeh in his welcome address said sports is not reserved for students who are academically weak as is often perceived. According to him, it takes intelligence and hard work to achieve success in sports adding that sports has rapidly become a unifying force for all Ghanaians.
Mr. Zumakpeh noted that not many Ghanaians exercise regularly and so playing sports makes for that deficit among students. He cautioned students against premarital and unprotected sex saying these will make them prone to HIV/AIDS.
