Two Community Health Planning and Services [CHPS] compounds have been completed and handed over to authorities of the Bolgatanga Municipal Health directorate in the Upper East region. The CHPS compounds situated at Yikene and Dorongo were constructed at the cost of 64 thousand Ghana Cedis and 60 thousand Ghana Cedis respectively.

Each of the facilities is composed of a three bedroom nurses’ quarters, an office and a store. But while the Dorongo CHPS compound is hooked to the national electricity grid and has a borehole, the Yikene CHPS compound has no source of water and is yet to be connected to the national grid.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Edward Ayiriba Ayagle in a speech delivered on his behalf, said government is committed to ensuring that every community has access to a health facility. He added that more CHPS facilities will be constructed for the remaining communities in the municipality.

Mr. Ayagle appealed to the staff of the Ghana Health Service to be patient with the local people when discharging their duties at the CHPS compounds. He pledged that the assembly will furnish the facilities with the required furniture for officers to be posted to man the facilities.

The chief executive thanked the landlords for readily releasing lands for the projects and tasked the assembly men for the areas to collaborate with the Ghana Health Service to do proper demarcation of the lands on which the CHPS are built.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Health Director, Miss Joyce Bagna thanked the assembly for the two health facilities noting that health services will now be closer to the people than ever. Miss Bagna was however worried that out of 17 health zones in the municipality, only nine zones have functioning CHPS compounds with community health officers.

The Municipal Health director said she has staff for the two newly completed CHPS compounds but without the needed furnishing and other vital amenities, it may become difficult for her staff to stay in the communities. She appealed to the assembly to drill boreholes and also connect electricity to all the CHPS compounds so as to facilitate work and also make it less burdensome for staff to live and work in the rural areas.

She urged community members to cooperate with the nurses and provide security for the CHPS compounds since there have been theft cases at some facilities. She also asked opinion leaders and elders in the communities to assist the Ghana Health Service in recruiting community health volunteers whose assistance will be needed by the community health nurses.

Miss Bagna admonished her staff to endeavour to remain at post when sent to man the CHPS compounds since they cannot tell when exactly community members will come with ailments needing urgent attention.

The handing over ceremonies were witnessed by the chiefs, their elders and people of the beneficiary communities and some staff of the Ghana Health Service.
