The rLG Communications Limited, a Ghanaian-owned mobile phones and laptops manufacturing company has presented a total of 360 brand new laptops to 15 Junior High Schools in the Bolgatanga Municipality. The schools each received 24 laptops. The St. Johns, Awogeya, Soe RC and the Anglican Junior high schools were among the recipients.

The Head of Corporate Affairs of rLG Communications Mr. Sam Kwesi Fletcher, who presented the laptops to the schools disclosed that his outfit and the government had a public-private partnership agreement to supply 60 thousand computers to basic schools throughout the country. He said the presentation marks the beginning of the distribution of more laptops to all junior high schools in the Upper East region which will continue in the coming weeks to cover remaining schools.

Mr. Fletcher noted that, ICT has taken over the world with a major revolution in the knowledge society where Ghana cannot afford to be left behind. He said rLG will continue to partner government and the Ministry of Education under the Basic Schools Computerisation Project to ensure that every child grasp the application of information and communication technology. According to him, the 360 laptops cost about 216,000 Ghana Cedis with each valued at about 600 Ghana Cedis.

The Corporate Affairs Head says rLG Communications targets to employ about 30,000 people by the end of 2012 to work at its assembling plant. Meanwhile the company is looking at the possibility of manufacturing solar-powered laptops in the near future.

In her keynote address, the Deputy Upper East regional minister, Mrs. Lucy Awuni observed that the computer has become one of the most important tools to work with in modern times without which no effective work can be done.

Mrs. Awuni recalled that in 2011, the government of Ghana instituted the Basic Schools Computerisation Project and subsequently entered into an agreement with rLG to supply computers to all basic schools in the country in order to give meaning to the teaching and learning of ICT. She commended rLG for the timely presentation of the laptops and warned teachers against keeping the computers to themselves instead of using them to teach their pupils. She also urged school authorities to ensure the safety of the laptops and repair them when they become faulty.

Upper East Regional director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Paul Apanga lauded government and rLG for the collaboration and appealed to district and municipal assemblies to extend electricity to schools for the effectiveness of the project. Mr. Apanga also thanked rLG Communications for organizing ICT training programmes for teachers noting that the impact has been positive.
