Last Friday, a total of 2,700 dressmaking and 998 hairdressing trainees in the Upper East region of Ghana graduated under the Trades and Vocations Module of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency [GYEEDA] formally known as the National Youth Employment Programme.

This module which is being implemented by GYEEDA in partnership with the Asongtaba Cottage Industry and Exchange Programme [ACI & EP] has already graduated several thousands of beneficiaries in the Ashanti, Eastern and Northern regions while other regions will soon experience similar interventions.

The Business Development Manager of ACI & EP, Mr. Faisal Webere Keliou in his address said government has identified the youth as a huge human resource that can contribute to Ghana’s economic development stressing that this can only be realised through well-defined public-private partnerships such as the one between his outfit and GYEEDA which has so far created several jobs for thousands of Ghanaian youth.

Mr. Keliou disclosed that under the partnership, the role of ACI & EP is to facilitate and oversee the training of beneficiary youth in various vocations with the overall objective of making them economically independent and socially productive. He said the training for the dressmakers was extended to one year so as to allow for beneficiaries to grasp all the essentials of dressmaking.

According to the Business Development Manager, the training was categorised into three stages where stage one saw the free provision of equipment and accessories to beneficiaries and the final stage being a micro credit scheme which provides financial and technical support for the beneficiaries to expand and diversify their businesses under the management and mentorship of Asongtaba. Mr. Keliou revealed that in the Upper East region, his outfit engaged the services of 335 and 145 master trainers to handle the trainees for the dressmaking and hairdressing vocations respectively.

The Deputy Upper East regional Minister, Mrs. Lucy Awuni noted that the GYEEDA –ACI & EP partnership is an intervention by government to offer a career path for the youth of Ghana which will enable them to make a bold step into the world of work. She said this particular intervention seeks to empower over 100,000 youth nationwide.

Mrs. Awuni also disclosed that the 2010-2012 recruitment calendar of GYEEDA saw over 300,000 unemployed youth engaged in various sectors of the economy for a maximum of two years. She said a further boost to youth employment is that the sector ministry has put in place an initiative to promote youth entrepreneurship through the GYEEDA Business Proposal Initiative. Under this, youth with creative business ideas are selected, trained and helped to set up businesses with seed fund, logistics and also mentored to ensure the business grows and becomes sustainable.

The graduating beneficiaries each received a certificate and a set of start-up equipment and accessories.
