The Deputy Minister for the ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed has stated that in today’s world where any kind of information can be accessed on the internet, it is proper that government assists Ghanaian students with Information and Communication Technology [ICT] equipment such as laptops to enhance their studies.

The Deputy Minister made the statement at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region during a ceremony to present over 500 rlG-Better Ghana Agenda branded laptops to students from the Bolgatanga Polytechnic, St. John Boscos and Gbewaa Colleges of Education and the Navrongo campus of the University for Development Students among a few selected Senior High Schools.

Dr. Ahmed who is also the current Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East constituency noted that by government’s collaboration with the rlG Communications Company to distribute laptops to students across various levels of education throughout the country also indicates that government supports the growth of local businesses.

He said the presentation gives testimony to the government’s resolve to ensure that progressively, each student in Ghana is provided a computer each to optimum ICT education while there are ongoing steps to recruit more ICT instructors for country’s education and learning institutions.

The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo in a statement cautioned the beneficiary students to desist from using the laptops to undertake negative activities such as viewing pornographic movies and indulging in internet fraud as these acts will draw back their quest for academic knowledge.

Mr. Woyongo observed that this is the second time his region is witnessing the mass presentation of laptops to students and schools and that similar arrangements will continue to ensure that as many students as possible get their personal computers to boost learning efforts. He said government’s priority on education now is to first provide the needed infrastructure as well as adequate teaching and learning materials while efforts will later be made to make basic education progressively free.

According to Mr. Woyongo, government will build 10 new colleges of education throughout the country in order to produce more professionally trained teachers to phase out the current high numbers of untrained teachers in the system. Also, additional Senior High Schools will be constructed in selected communities.
