Culture And Chieftaincy Minister Calls On Nayiri | Ghana Official Portal
Nayiri Naa Bohagu in a welcome address read on his behalf noted that the chieftaincy institution plays very vital roles in the realisation of the country’s development agenda. He said chiefs occupy a unique position in their respective traditional areas which enables them to perform administrative, quasi judicial and social functions for the benefit of their societies. This realisation complement the functions of district assemblies and the central government.
The king said chiefs can play more active roles in local governance when given the opportunity and necessary resources. He therefore asked for an increment in the percentage of traditional representation in the deliberations and functions of district assemblies.
The Nayiri also observed that in the past revenues from sources in the traditional areas accrued to chiefs but now these rather go to district assembles. He further observed that district assemblies often make estimates of monthly allowances to chiefs but sadly, these have only remained on paper in some districts. This situation has become a disincentive to some chiefs.
The final concern of Nayiri was cast on the dilapidated traditional council constructed in 1948, the council whose members are spread over three district assemblies has not seen any renovation.
He thanked government however, for helping him over the years to deliver to the needs of his people.
The Culture and Chieftaincy Minister Sampson Kwaku Boafo who is also the MP for Subin in response to Nayiri's concerns said the chieftaincy bill has been passed and is now awaiting presidential assent to become law. Mr Boafo said this will eventually solve most problems facing the chieftaincy institution.
He assured the king that succession procedures are being documented by his ministry in consultation with stakeholders thus the issue of impostors will be handled once and for all.
The Minister disclosed that a German NGO GTZ has offered to provide computers and other logistics to the Regional houses of chiefs to help in their official duties.
