INDISCIPLINE AT YUSI DAM - NAVRONGO
Located somewhere in Navrongo Central near Basina Primary School, the Yusi dam is a multipurpose water body used by the inhabitants of the Kassena- Nankana District. The dam, according to Navro Pio's representative, Arthur Balinia, covers a total of about six hectors of land.
The people of Navrongo especially those living near the dam use the water for diverse purposes. Some fetch water from the dam to mold bricks and blocks for construction works whilst others use it to water their plants.
Whilst the dam is the only available source of water to live-stock within Navrongo central, a considerable number of people also do their laundry on the banks of the dam. Yusi also serves as a source of entertainment as many youth go there to swim at their leisure time.
No wonder then that, the dam has motivated a lot of people to acquire plots of land for building at the Yusi area. This nearness of the dam, people say will cut the cost of having to buy water for the purpose of building.
Unfortunately, a few people have turned the dam into a refuse dump whilst others even defecate along the banks and in the streams feeding the dam. It is thus not uncommon to see rags, rubber bags, groundnuts shells and so on along the banks of the dam. I am more particular about the defecation done along the dam’s banks. The rains come and wash this waste into the dam posting a health hazard to users of the dam. The other wastes like groundnuts shells, rubber bags, rusted basins etc are also swept into the dam, reducing its capacity to hold enough water.
I write to throw a challenge to those who indulge in these negative acts to be self-disciplined and to refrain from such untoward attitudes. I also use this medium to appeal to the Navro Pio to establish a body of people mandated to arrest and summon anyone found defecating and or dumping waste along the banks of the dam. Any such person should be tried at the chief’s palace and subsequently punished.
The Kasena-Nankana District Assembly should collaborate with the chiefs and people of the district to rid the dam of these wastes so that it can hold more water for a longer time.
