DO MORE TO PUBLICISE Ghana Government Portal September 10, 2008

It has been the mandate of the information Services Department ISD, which is a facet of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to create awareness on government policies and programmes especially at the grassroots.
Indeed, the mission statement of the ISD says that the Information Services Department exists to create awareness on government policies, programmes and activities; promoting Ghana’s international marketing agenda, providing public relations support to other ministries, departments and agencies and submitting feedback reports from the public to government.
It is worthy to note that the ISD has over the years responded to the needs of the public and successive governments with dispatch, dedication and professionalism.
What the ISD has failed to do in my view over the years is that, it has done little in the area of creating awareness for its own website which publishes most of the truthful realities from the country side and covers issues from the neglected areas of Ghana.
The ISD’s website, usually referred to as the Ghana government portal is www.ghana gov.gh .It was launched by the vice president; Alhaji Aliu Mahama in 2003.When one logs on to the site, all the “gospel truth” about Ghana from all the districts in all the ten regions can be gotten.
Unfortunately, since the launch of the www.ghana.gov.gh, the ISD has not done much publicity for the site resulting in low patronage of content it publishes. I must confess that the site is loaded with a host of new items, information and feature stories for all categories of people; from students to teachers, business men to CEOs of companies and foreign nationals. This site is also ideal for nationals of other countries willing to visit Ghana for the first time or hoping to invest in Ghana or even learn of how to acquire traveling documents form the legally mandated state departments.
Any reader of this article will agree with me that the Ghana government portal indeed has a lot more to offer on the internet that cannot be captured in a single write up.
I urged the minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Asamoah Boateng and his directors to consider a re-launch of www.ghana.gov.gh in order to ensure that as many people as possible become aware of the site and subsequently browse it for their information needs. Also radio jingles and television commercials should be created by the ministry to sell the site to the general public.
This will no doubt create the needed publicity for the site thereby propagating the policies, programmes and activities of the government of the day to whole big universe of internet users in Ghana and the world at large.
