ALL IS OVER

APRIL 24, 2007

A solemn pontifical high mass service under the theme “Go home to your people and tell all that the Lord in His mercy has done for you”, has been said at the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica at Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana district, Upper East region. The mass marked the climax of the centenary celebrations of the Tamale Ecclesiastical province.

The main celebrant of the mass was Cardinal Ivan Dias, who represented Pope Benedict the XVI. In his homily, he asked Christians to look at past with gratitude, the present with joy and the future with hope bearing in mind the blessings of God in their lives and in the Tamale Ecclesiastical province in general.

Cardinal Dias prayed to God to continue showering His grace. He said in looking at the past, Christians must give thanks to God for His uncountable graces poured on Northern Ghana over the past 100 years. The Cardinal urged catholic faithful to always pray for those who have lost their lives through the propagation of God’s word especially the French missionaries who entered the country through Navrongo to preach the gospel.

Presenting the penitential rite, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, George Kochery said the centenary celebration is an important activity in the life of the church to remind catholic faithful of the beginning of Catholicism in the North. His holiness Kochery said the occasion should inspire the lay faithful to become more rooted in faith.

In a speech for him by the Upper East regional minister Boniface Gambila, the president , John Agyekum Kufuor noted that during the 100 years of evangelaisation, the Catholic Church has not only preached the gospel but has also contributed immensely to the development of Ghana in the areas of education, health and youth transformation among others.

He said for instance, the St. John Boscos training college was established by the church and has produced the chunk of the country’s trained teachers. President Kufuor commended the church for its contribution towards quality health care delivery across the length and breath of the country.

Remarks: The above news item was also broadcast on GBC URA Radio in April, 2007 at which time I was a news reporter with the station.
