NUTRITION CENTRE FOR NAVIO

MAY 12, 2007

A nutrition centre to help raise the standard of meals for children under five years has been inaugurated at Navio in the Kassena-Nankana [now the Kassena-Nankana West district] district of the Upper East region.

The Japan International Co-operation Agency, JICA voted GH¢1000 for the implementation of the project with the Kassena-Nankana district assembly providing roofing sheets whilst the Buru-Navio community provided labour.

The assembly member for Buru-Navio. Mr. Thomas Alua Asangchira in a speech said it was in 2004 that a community health compound was built for his community but as at May 2007, the facility was yet to be connected to the national electricity grid. This situation he noted made it impossible for the storage of vital drugs for the community’s use.

Mr. Asangchira said the community is pulling together resources to rehabilitate an old clinic block and appealed to the Ghana Health Service to post a midwife to man the facility when work is completed. He also observed that there are insufficient classrooms in most schools in the area compelling pupils to attend classes under trees and called on the district assembly and philanthropists to do something quickly to remedy the situation.

The assembly member also appealed to the St. John Boscos College to post teachers to the Navio area under its teaching practice programme. Meanwhile he asked the University for Development Studies to extend its routine field programme to the area so that its students can research into problems facing the area. Mr. Asangchira advised parents to channel their resources into the education and proper feeding of their children.

The District Director of Health Services, DDHS for Kassena-Nankana, Madam Rofina Asuru was not happy with the way the nutrition centre project was being handled with reluctance by the community. She thanked the World Food Programme, WFP for providing food stuffs and furniture for the nutrition centres at Nakolo, Navio and Yua.

Madam Asuru advised the community to form a management committee to ensure that food is prepared under hygienic conditions and to report to the Ghana Health Service on the progress of work and challenges the programme may encounter.

The DDHS warned against stealing of the food meant for the children saying the District Health Management Team and the WFP will be monitoring activities. She cautioned the people against eating dead bird since bird flu has been detected in neighbouring countries.

The Kassena-Nankana district chief executive, Emmanuel Chegewe disclosed that the assembly has so far spent about GH¢45000 in the provision of nutrition centres at various locations across the district. In addition, GH¢1000 has been used on routine distribution of food to these nutrition centres.

The DCE promised to extend electricity to the Navio Community Health Compound and the nutrition centre.

Remarks: This story was also broadcast on GBC URA Radio in May, 2007 at which time I was reporting for radio news with this station.

I will also appreciate it if philanthropists come to the aid of this community in the provision of classroom blocks, potable water and small scale loans to the rural women in Navio and Tazika [These two villages form my hometown]. You may contact me through atogewe@yahoo.com or 0233244099393
