Citizens in the East Mamprusi district, EMD of the Northern region have not been able to receive GTV signals from the last week of October, 2008 to November, 2008.It will be recalled that the first presidential debate organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs was broadcast live on GTV but people in this district could not view the programme as a result of fluctuations or total blackout on GTV’s network which is the only network available to people in Gambaga, Nalerigu and elsewhere in the district.
Also, UNIQUE FM’s [GBC’s station] signals have been off air within the same period. This FM which now broadcasts nationwide is the main source of news in the people of the district. This thus implies that people here have at least lost track of the country’s current affairs since October 29, 2008 to date.
As if by coincidence, the second phase of the presidential debate held in Tamale, capital of the Northern region could not still be viewed by citizens in the EMD because again, GTV signals were faulty. Though the Information Services Department’s [ISD] district office in Gambaga made announcements to alert people to view the two debates, only a handful of people who had satellite dishes were able to view the programme.
When the ISD contacted the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s, GBC substation in Gambaga, the Assistant technical officer, Mr. Mohammed Abdul Rahaman Sa-eed said the problem in relaying transmission from the head office was detected two months ago and reports to that effect sent to Accra and the GBC’s Northern regional office for attention.
He attributed the problem to low voltage and satellite malfunctioning. He noted that for the substation to relay transmission effectively, a separate transformer will have to be provided to supply power to the equipment.
At as press time, a technical team from the GBC’s maintenance division had arrived from Accra and started work on the substation.
Until this transmission problem is completely rectified, voters and citizens in general in the East Mamprusi district may not be well-informed as to which candidates to vote for based on issues in the December 07, general elections.
