The Mamprusi East District Assembly, EMDA in the Northern region has resolved to set aside the first Saturday of every month for communal cleaning throughout the district in line with President Atta Mills’ policy of ensuring a clean Ghana.
Honourable Assembly members of the EMDA unanimously reached the resolution during the first ordinary meeting of the assembly’s second session held at Gambaga.
The district chief executive of Mamprusi East, Honourable Adam Imoro who endorsed the resolution observed that many diseases that people contract in East Mamprusi are sanitation related and called for clean environments at all times. He urged the assembly members spearhead such clean-up campaigns.
Honourable Imoro disclosed that the assembly received 142,217.92 Ghana Cedis as its share of the common fund for the last quarter of 2008 in April this year. Part of the amount was used to complete 2007 European Union projects, repair the assembly’s vehicles and equipment while fractions of it went into provision of street lights and extension of electricity to Langbensi and Gbintri police stations.
The DCE noted that peace and security are a vital ingredient in the development efforts of the district and that maintaining the two will be high on his agenda. He said more police stations will be constructed in communities referred to as trouble spots to pre-empt any possible breach of peace and order.
Honourable Imoro challenged the finance subcommittee to fashion out new ways of increasing internally generated funds which go to supplement the common fund in the execution of projects. He said when he assumed office, he requested for the registration of all businesses so that proper taxes could be levied and this saw the registration of 470 businesses across the district.
On housing, he said owing to lack of accommodation, many professionals refuse postings to the district and pledged to renovate existing state quarters while teaming with development partners to build new bungalows to house personnel serving in the district.
Honourable Imoro further urged parents to send their children to school adding that he will roll out a policy to assist brilliant but needy students at all levels of education and bond them to serve in the district when they complete.
He thanked assembly members for their cooperation and hopes it continues for the benefit of the whole district.
The Presiding Member, Honourable Tibila Issahaka Sandow in a welcome address asked the DCE and the co-coordinating director to be fair to all assembly persons in order to help them develop their electoral areas.
In a message on security to the assembly, the Mamprusi East district police commander, ASP Jose Sanze advised the assembly persons to form neigbourhood watchdog committees in their areas to help check criminal activities and also report such activities to the police for appropriate action to be taken.
The coordinating director, Mr. Ivan Gam who is also secretary to the assembly moved for the five subcommittees to be reconstituted in conformity with the standing orders of the assembly.
The meeting which marked the first address of the DCE to the assembly also approved a number of projects including the construction of KVIPs and three-unit classroom blocks for Gambaga and Nagboo communities funds of 190,000 Ghana Cedis from the District Wide Assistance Programme. Also, three classrooms will be built for the health assistance training school at Nalerigu while the Nalerigu market complex and Zambulugu primary schools will be renovated under a different fund.
