The Navrongo Senior High School popularly known as NAVASCO in 2009 registered 391 candidates for that year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Exam out of which 221 qualified to enter tertiary institutions with a best aggregate of seven.

The headmaster of NAVASCO, Mr. Patrick Tangonyire made this known in a welcome address at the official launch of the 50th anniversary of the school in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district in the Upper East region.

Mr. Tangonyire said the purpose of the launch is to make public the 50th anniversary celebrations and to solicit support from government, businesses, NGOs, the Parent-Teacher Association [PTA] and other stakeholders to undertake infrastructural projects. It is also to afford the administration a platform to appreciate the efforts of the school’s founding fathers and lastly, to present challenges facing NAVASCO in the hope that stakeholders will respond to the school’s cry for help.

The headmaster disclosed that of all the senior high schools in Upper East, only NAVASCO offers six courses. According to him, the school was established in 1960 with only 67 students but now has a student population of 1,287 and staff strength of 74 teaching staff and 85 non-teaching staff.

Touching on the theme for the anniversary, “NAVASCO, 50 years of true light”, Mr. Tangonyire revealed that the secret behind the school’s successes over the years is as a result of discipline, hard work and humility. He said despite numerous challenges the school faced, it has chalked several successes in sports, academics and other co-curricular activities such as debates and quiz competitions.

Among these challenges are lack of a pick-up vehicle for administrative purposes, inadequate dormitories, classrooms, staff bungalows and dinning hall. Other pressing challenges are inadequate water supply, inadequate furniture and the need to fence the school in order to protect its property and land from encroachers.

However, the headmaster thanked government and the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central for donating an Eicher bus to the school and mechanising a borehole plus provision of street lights respectively. Meanwhile, he called on all individuals, organisations and old student groupings to urgently support NAVASCO in all aspects of its development.

The Kassena-Nankana East district chief executive Hon. Emmanuel Andema, who launched the anniversary, said it is the priority of Mills’ government to ensure that education is given the needed boost in order for it to merit its worth in national development. He noted that the district assembly has assisted NAVASCO in the past and pledged that more help will be extended to the school in its quest to educate the nation’s future leaders.

Honourable Andema told the student body that the era of student rioting is passed and gone and therefore advised them to use dialogue in solving any grievances that may arise between them and the administration. He further urged the students to respect school authorities and regulations.

The Acting Upper East Regional Director of education Mrs. Agnes Atagabe, advised the students against drug abuse, premarital sex and other vices. She said they should focus all attention on their books because education opens doors to personal and societal development.

Navrongo Central MP, Mr. Joseph Kofi Adda whose speech was read for him presented a set of jerseys to the school and also pledged to donate a set of a brass band instruments and 100 foldable chairs valued at GH C 3000.oo at a later date.

The PTA Chairman, Rev. Stephen Aputara in a speech read on his behalf disclosed that the association has undertaken to renovate one staff bungalow a year and that so far, two have been renovated. In addition, a six-room apartment is being put up to house national service personnel.

An appeal for fund in aid of a library complex and an Information & Communication Technology block yielded over 3000.00 Ghana Cedis. Among the donors are an old Navascan, Professor David Miller and his wife who donated 1000.00 Ghana Cedis while the chairman for the function, also an old boy, Pε Joseph Banape Afagachi pledged a bull.

Chiefs around Navrongo, heads of educational institutions and old students were among many guests who attended the launching ceremony.
