Basic school pupils in the Upper East Region are to receive 11,799 pieces of school uniform and 300,000 exercise books in the next few weeks under government’s policy of free distribution of school uniform and exercise books to students across the country.
The Acting Upper East regional director of Education, Mrs. Agnes Atagabe disclosed this in a welcome address at an independence day parade to mark Ghana’s 53rd anniversary after freeing itself from colonial rule. She commended government for increasing the Capitation Grant to basic schools and also increasing the number of schools under the Ghana School Feeding Programme in the region to 54.
Mrs. Atagabe further praised government for quickly releasing monies to pay outstanding allowances and other emoluments to avert the NAGRAT strike which has returned graduate teachers to the classroom for the academic work to continue.
She said notwithstanding the numerous problems facing teachers such as inadequate housing, low salaries and lack of incentives for teachers in rural areas, teachers should continue to improve their contact hours at all levels. She disclosed that President Atta Mills in his nation’s address asked for a catalogue of all problems facing teacher associations like GNAT, NAGRAT and others and this opportunity will be used to better welfare of all teachers.
Mrs. Atagabe called on chiefs, non-governmental organisations and other bodies to support the Ghana Education Service in delivering quality education but advised students to eschew occultism, truancy, drug abuse, premarital sex and internet fraud [sakawa] saying these will only divert their study time leading to poor academic performance.
The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark O. Woyongo in his anniversary address, observed that the quality of the Ghanaian human resource indicates that the country has a huge potential to develop. This therefore falls in line with the theme for the 53rd Independence Anniversary “investing in the youth for a better Ghana ”. He noted that everywhere in the world, the creativity, talent and professional expertise of the Ghanaian is never in doubt.
Mr. Woyongo said government is tackling the unemployment issue through a three-prong approach – expansion in the service industry and manufacturing sector and a further expansion in the agro-industrial sector in order to create jobs for the many jobless youth including those graduating from the universities yearly.
The regional minister noted that the independence of Ghana has deep historic significance in Africa ’s struggle for political emancipation thus nothing should be done to reverse this. He then reiterated President Mills’ resolve not to engage in political vendetta stressing that no amount of organised detraction or political brainstorming will break this resolve to chart a new course in Ghana ’s political history.
He pledged that his administration will work with all interest groups to ensure that violent conflicts are greatly reduced in the region. Referring to the Bawku conflict, he said though some other causes may be cited, poverty cannot be ruled out. Therefore, it is important that efforts are geared towards engaging the youth in productive employment.
Mr. Woyongo stressed that National Democratic Congress government will not condone any actions that pitch one citizen against the other as a way settling scores. This he noted is unacceptable and not the Ghanaian way of doing things.
According to him, the rule of law and due process are the only legitimate ways of seeking redress for any violations of individual and other rights.
In all, 72 schools comprising basic, junior and senior high schools took part in the march past which was also witnessed by a 21 member Burkinabé delegation led by Issa Compaore, Secretary General of the Central South Region of Burkina Faso.
