The first general assembly meeting of the trans-boundary management committee of the White Volta Basin has been held at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region. The assembly comprises members from Burkina Faso and the Upper East region of Ghana who constantly rely on the water resources of the White Volta for their livelihood.
The overall objective of the assembly is to ensure sustainable utilization of water resources of the White Volta basin.
The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo in a welcome address at the function commended the International Union for Conservation of Nature for helping to motivate countries with interest in the White Volta Basin to constantly meet for discussions while mobilizing support for the improved management of shared water resources.
The regional minister recalled that six months ago, he led a delegation to attend a tripartite meeting in Tenkodogo, Togo which discussed challenges in the corridors of Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana and this centered on transportation, agriculture, security, shared water resources among others.
Mr. Woyongo noted that the regular meetings of stakeholders sharing resources of the Volta Basin has culminated in fostering proximity between all neighbours around the corridors of the water body and this should be further strengthened.
The Governor of the Central East region of Burkina Faso, Mr. Simeon Sawadogo who also addressed the meeting called on all users of the White Volta to do away with practices that will lead to pollution, over exploitation of the water resources and other abuses.
The Governor also thanked the government of Ghana for supplying motor pumps and generators at subsidized prices to farmers along the White Volta Basin which has persuaded farmers not to farm close to the White Volta as they now use these pumps to draw water to farmlands far away from the water body.
The participants who were drawn from Upper East region and parts of the Northern region of Ghana and also from Burkina Faso later shared experiences and renewed the mandate of executives to steer the affairs of the general assembly.
