SHS GET ADDITIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
SHS GET ADDITIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE July 23, 2010
BY P. A. WEDAM
A number of different infrastructural projects including classroom blocks, dormitories, staff bungalows and science laboratories are under construction on several senior high school campuses in the Upper East region.
This is in line with government’s resolve to adequately position second cycle institutions throughout the country for the smooth intake of fresh students by September 2010 when the next academic year begins.
The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo who went round with the media and the regional planning officer to inspect the progress of work on these projects noted with worry the slow pace of work on the part of a few contractors. He therefore directed the Northern Consultants, a consultant overseeing many of the projects, the regional planning officer and the Architectural and Engineering Services Limited [AESL] to terminate contracts which fall far behind schedule and re-award them to ensure timely completion.
Mr. Woyongo also tasked the consultant and the district monitoring teams to visit project sites regularly to keep contractors in check by ensuring that their works follow acceptable standards and building layouts as contained in the contracts awarded.
Led by the Kassena-Nankana East district chief executive Hon. Andema, the regional minister inspected a six-unit classroom block being constructed by Almunaz Construction Works Limited at the cost of 273,000.oo Ghana Cedis, an 800 seater capacity assembly hall at the cost of 533,920.26 Ghana Cedis and an ICT, Science laboratory and classroom complex all at the Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School in Navrongo. At the time of the minister’s visit, all these projects were said to be on schedule.
Mr. Woyongo then proceeded to Gaani near Navrongo where he inspected 12 new projects including staff bungalows, classroom blocks and administration block among others currently under construction to house the permanent campus of Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High School.
Still in the Kassena-Nankana East district, he inspected projects at the St. John Boscos College of Education, Navrongo Senior High School and the St. John Integrated Secondary-Technical SHS at Tono and pledged to provide the school with a bus and a pick-up vehicle plus more infrastructure to meet the school’s special needs.
Mr. Woyongo also inspected similar ongoing projects at the Sandema Secondary-Technical SHS and the Fumbisi Senior High School in the Builsa district and Sirigu Senior High School in the Kassena-Nankana West district.
All the infrastructural projects inspected by the regional minister are funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund.
Meanwhile during his visit to the Kassena-Nankana East district, the regional minister took time to present 50 appointment letters to persons with disabilities to work under various modules of the National Youth Employment Programme.
