The Garu-Tempane district in the Upper East region has realised a significant increase in its revenue mobilisation drive as a result of prudent measures adopted by the leadership of the assembly. Consequently, the assembly’s revenue of GH ¢279,193.53 in 2009 rose to GH ¢332,999.29 in 2010. The District Chief Executive, Honourbale David Adakudugu made this known during a meet-the-press programme organised by the assembly in Garu.

Honourable Adakudugu said upon assumption of office, he and his technocrats caused the registration and collection of property rates for the establishment of telecommunication masts, constituted revenue task forces, blocked loop holes in revenue collection while dishonest collectors were replaced and this led to massive gains in revenues.

It also came to light during the DCE’s presentation that, his administration inherited a debt of GH¢1,146,625.86 from the immediate past government of which, GH ¢900,000.00 has been serviced. Close to 80 per cent of the debt was banked on the district assembly’s common fund.

The DCE however disclosed that in line with President Mills’ pledge to continue with laudable projects of state, the assembly has completed 4 number three-unit early childhood development centres at Kpatia, Bugri, Bareboka and Kpikpira while three-unit classroom blocks plus urinals have been completed for the Takore, Kariyata and Bimpela communities.

Meanwhile, Honouable Adakudugu has since 2009, added new projects to further develop the district some of which include the construction of 6-unit classroom block at Bulipielsa and three-unit classroom blocks with KVIP plus urinals at Kongo, Nomboko and Akara, the rehabilitation of other schools and provision of 6000 dual desks to schools across the district.

On health, the DCE said the GH ¢85,000.oo has been set aside for the construction of an out patient department which transform into a district hospital while community health compounds have been built at Gagbiri and Aloko. Also, the district has sponsored the training of 78 nursing officers and six medical students who are bonded to serve the district upon completion.

Honourable Adakudugu’s presentation also touched on improved local governance and road infrastructure in the district, water and sanitation and agriculture under which area there have been major rehabilitation of dams at Basyonde, Woriyanga and Songo.

The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo who opened the meet-the-press programme noted that initially, the programme held in Accra featured only ministers but the Regional Coordinating Council directed all district assemblies to use the meet-the-press programme as a means of accounting to the people what they are doing with the tax payers’ money.

Mr. Woyongo gave the assurance that there will be a face lift for roads in the Garu-Tempane area with the construction of the eastern corridor road from the Volta region through the Northern region to Missiga. He added that, plans are being finalized for the tarring of the Garu-Nomboko road while all link roads to district capitals in the region will also be tarred.

The regional minister observed that the recent inauguration of the SADA board by President Mills shows government’s commitment to spread development to the northern parts of the country to make for the development deficit between the south and the north. He appealed to chiefs and land owners to release land for such projects.
