A new youth group christened the Upper East Youth Association [UEYA] has been inaugurated at Bolgatanga with the core aims and objectives of influencing policies for the total development of the region, mobilising and building the capacity of young people and to recognise and support effective leadership in the Upper East region. The association has the motto: “Development Is Our Concern”
The UEYA which is a non-partisan and non-profit making organisation also seeks to foster unity among the youth of the Upper East region, demand accountability and transparency from duty bearers, promote investment and entrepreneurship and to discourage the youth from indulging in substance abuse.
The Interim President of the association, Mr. Jonathan Adabre in a welcome address disclosed that the idea for the formation of the UEYA was nursed some years ago but became rife in September 2010. He said the association has observed with worry certain occurrences in the past which have recurred without any corrective measures. These include the rush construction of the jubilee park, the poor planning and construction of the Bolgatanga central market, wrongful citing of some schools and health facilities among others.
Mr. Adabre also noted that the Upper East has been tagged one of the most deprived regions in the country but over the years, no special attention has been given to it so as to place it at par with other regions. He said the association will bring all the youth together to harness their skills and competencies to right the wrongs in society resulting in the development of the region at large.
He noted that the association may face failures and frustrations in its endeavours but emphasised that “we are going all out to mobilise to support good and exemplary leadership; we will recognise good leadership regardless of where it is coming from”. He added that his group will work hard to expose corruption in all its forms and make efforts to bring to book those who misuse their mandates and offices for personal gains.
The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edward Ayiriba Ayagle who witnessed the inauguration of the association and spoke on behalf of the Upper East regional minister, told the association’s members that government will ensure that, the country’s youth are well trained and resourced to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Hon. Ayagle who donated 100 Ghana Cedis in support of the association’s activities advised the youth against drug abuse and sexual promiscuity saying, these will affect their lives adversely. He asked the association to respect authority in their dealings and also consult with knowledgeable persons and groups before taking certain major actions.
