The Upper East Regional Health directorate has allayed fears of members of Council of State and the general public of the spread of Poliomyelitis (Polio) and high rates of maternal mortalities in the region.
A Deputy Director of Administration of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Mr .Lucio Dery gave the assurance when reacting to some health concerns raised by Council of State Chairman, Professor Kofi Awoonor when the chairman led members of the council to interact with the Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Woyongo and regional heads of department. The council was in the region for a two day working tour as part of its nationwide outreach programme.
Mr. Derry said through a weekly based monitoring system, routine immunisations of children and continuous education embarked on, the region has been on top health issues. He said the sector has also provided health services to children from neighboring countries during the immunisations programmes.
Also on maternal and child mortality, he said the directorate has promoted domiciliary deliveries in communities where midwives either moved into communities to deliver pregnant women at home or facilitated their movement to the main health facilities for them to deliver. For instance, ambulances have been placed in towns while tricycle ambulance services were provided for easy access to main health facilities at the communities in times of emergencies.
Reacting to concerns raised on deaths as a result of wrongful use of chemicals and insecticides in the region, Mr. Emmanuel Eledi, Regional Director of Agriculture, said the occurrence was because of refusal of farmers to follow instructions, misuse and poor storage procedures of agrochemicals.
He added that the legal regime in controlling the entry and use of some farm chemicals by farmers was not the best in the country while peddlers of agrochemicals compounded the situation. Council Members were not satisfied with extension services provided to farmers and called for a beef up on education.
Professor Kofi Awoonor later led the council members to a meeting with the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edward A. Ayagle and some assembly members during which the remuneration for assembly members, politicisation of district assembly elections among other issues were discussed.
The two day working visit was made up of the full compliment of Members of Council of State. The aim of the council is to see the state of developmental projects in the region so as to enable them to advice the President on their return. They have already visited the Upper West and Northern regions.
