GOVERNMENT ACCEPTS ABOUT 90 PER CENT OF CRC RECOMMENDATIONS                 08th July, 2012

The Deputy Minister of Information, Hon. James Agyenim-Boateng has revealed that Government’s White Paper, issued in June, 2012 accepted about 90% of the total recommendations submitted by the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) at the end of its nationwide and international deliberations with Ghanaians.

The Deputy Information Minister said this in the Northern regional capital, Tamale during a media engagement session on the report of the Constitution Review Commission and the
Government’s White Paper for media practitioners in the three regions of the North. Traditional rulers from three Northern regions and some state institutions including the National Commission for Civic Education and the Information Services Department also participated in the programme which was organised by the Ministry of Information.

Mr. Agyenim-Boateng said the government will soon announce a five member                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       implementation committee to facilitate the process of amending the 1992 constitution in accordance with chapter 25 of the 1992 which deals with amendments to the constitution.

He disclosed that the commission among others, which was set up under the Constitution Review Commission of Inquiry Instrument 2012, C.T. 64, was mandated to solicit the views of Ghanaians on the operation of the 1992 constitution which has been used to administer the country for close to 20 years.

He added that, the commission was also set up to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the 1992 constitution and to recommend to the government for consideration a draft bill for possible amendments to the constitution.

Touching on the composition of membership of the commission, the Deputy Minister said it was wide and varied with members coming from the chieftaincy institution, the academia, civil society and industry as well as from various political affiliations.

Members of the CRC including its former executive secretary, Dr. Raymond Atuguba and Lawyer Scott Pwamang also addressed the participants as well as answered questions on various issues relating to the submissions received from the public.
