UPPER EAST REGIONAL HOUSE OF CHIEFS GIVEN A FACELIFT 6th May, 2019

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Paulina Patience Abayage, has handed over some completed renovation works at portions of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs [RHC], to the House for its use. The works were undertaken in the main meeting auditorium of the House.

Madam Abayage undertook the works resulting from an appeal made to her by the House some six months ago, when she honoured an invitation to address one of its regular sittings. The scope of works the minister carried out included the installation of five brand new NASCO split-unit air conditioners, provision of a new JIEPAK-branded chargeable Public Address System as well as the installation of 10 new pieces of Crompton-branded ceiling fans.

Since the establishment of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in the 1970s, the House, located in the regional capital, Bolgatanga, has not seen any major facelift through the decades till the intervention by Hon. Abayage.

At a brief ceremony held in the auditorium of the House to hand over the completed works to the Standing Committee of the House, Hon. Abayage noted that it was improper for “our chiefs, the custodians of our tradition and rulers of our paramountcies to hold their deliberations in the full glare of the public”. She further noted that but for her intervention, the meeting auditorium of the RHC used to be opened ajar during their revered and crucial meetings because of the unbearable heat in the perimetre.

She observed that as a result, passers-by and other mischievous persons could easily ears-drop on meetings of the House and subsequently, do whatever they wanted with such privileged information. She stated that, a respected institution such as the RHC had to operate from a dignified environment such as what she has been able provide for and that, this was the vital urge that pushed her to quickly respond to the appeal the House put before her months ago.

According the Regional Minister, there were still some additional works that needed to be done to give the House a befitting look so as to meet the status of the revered chiefs. These she noted included, a replacement of the ceiling of the same auditorium and installation of new louver blades among others and thus, gave the assurance that, she would discuss with stakeholders to see how quickly they could be fixed.

She hinted of pending plans to build a new ultramodern Regional House of Chiefs for the region as some sons and daughters of the region had mooted the idea of securing a spacious piece of land for that purpose stressing that, she would support such efforts with all her “might and main”.

Hon. Abayage responded positively to yet another request, this time, from Vice President of the House, Bo-Naba Baba Salifu A. Lemyaarum. It was a call for assistance from the Regional Minister to aid selected chiefs and queen mothers from the region, to attend a training on Chieftaincy Dispute Prevention and Land Administration at the University for Professional Studies in Accra.

Meanwhile, earlier in a welcome address read on behalf of the president of the House, Bo-Naba commended the Regional Minister for her gesture admitting that, it was a big relief to the chiefs and queen mothers of the region as their deliberations will from now, be held in a very cool and welcoming premises.

The Bo-Naba noted that, the speedy response of the minister to their appeal demonstrated that she was committed in supporting the chieftaincy institution. He also praised Hon. Abayage as head of the Regional Security Council [REGSEC], for her relentless efforts in keeping peace in the region over the period.
