BONGO LORRY STATION TO GET A FACE LIFT & STORES 23rd OCTOBER, 2019
The Bongo main lorry station in the
Bongo District of the Upper East Region is to receive a face lift with the
tarring of its whole floor space with pavement blocks and the construction of
10 lockable stores in the premises. Since inauguration in 1991, the lorry
station has not seen any renovation or expansion works.
Bongo District Chief Executive [DCE], Hon. Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga who handed over the site to the contractor, TECH 2 Ltd. this Wednesday morning, disclosed that the job was to be completed within six months and will cost the Assembly a total of 475,000.00 Ghana Cedis. He revealed that the project had been on the Assembly’s plans for a while and that, the initial plan was to construct a number of storey buildings at the station however, the cost presented by a consultant was pegged at about 4,800,000 million Ghana Cedis to involve a three-phase construction.
The DCE gave the assurance that the funds for the project were already secured and ready for disbursement to the contractor. He therefore appealed to people in the vicinity especially those operating from temporal structures to quickly pack out their goods and other wares in order to give way for the contractor to demolish any unwanted structures for works to start and run smoothly. He stated that the Assembly had already held engagements with business owners within the affected area about five months ago and that, the construction was not going to be a surprise event to anyone.

According to Hon. Ayamga who is
also the New Patriotic Party’s [NPP] Candidate for the Bongo Constituency for
the 2020 general elections, this contract sum was far above the reach of the
Assembly and it therefore reworked the designs and settled on the construction
of a set of 10 stores alongside the floor pavement of the station itself for
now. He disclosed that in addition to
this, some three sheds will be erected in the station to provide shade for both
drivers and passengers as well as other patrons who move into the area for
business.

Hon. Ayamga praised the Paramount
Chief of Bongo, Bo-Naba Baba Salifu A. Lemyaarum for his effective mediatory
roles in the whole process leading to the handing over site. He also recalled
that all affected structures had also been marked with specific signs by the
Assembly’s works engineers and that owners of those marked structures knew they
were going to be pulled down eventually.
He explained that after marking out
the area for the Assembly’s 10 lockable stores, capable persons including
businessmen and women would be given the opportunity under a
public-private-partnership arrangement, to put up additional stores according
to specification within the station’s enclave. They shall operate for a
specified number of years then transfer ownership to the Assembly but at the
expiration of that arrangement, a person could request for a renewal and if the
required demands from the Assembly are met, the occupant would continue to use
the facility.
He charged the contractor to
deliver a beautiful and quality job as the project was intended to not only to
beautify the district’s capital, but to also command some respect from visitors
to the district.
In his remarks, the Bo-Naba said it
was his wish to see the rapid development of all communities and places in his
traditional area. He was therefore very glad to see fruition of the project and
called on his people to support contractor to complete the project within
schedule.
