WASH BASELINE REPORT VALIDATION UNDERWAY IN BOLGA 25th October, 2019
A stakeholders’ workshop to
validate a baseline survey report on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene [WASH] which
was conducted about five months ago is underway in Bolgatanga, capital of the Upper Eat Region. The survey was done in some six selected districts across the Upper East Region.
Secretary General of the
Ghana Red Cross Society [GRCS], Mr. Samuel Kofi Addo in his opening remarks at the workshop, entreated the participants to be
attentive and to contribute meaningfully to the discussions since the document to be
compiled for presentation at the end of the meeting, would be deemed to contain
the views of all stakeholders.
He gave special commendation to the Swiss Red Cross emphasising that, it was the only national partner society, that had stood by the GRCS and has been supporting its activities and interventions since the late 1980s and hoped such collaboration would continue.
Mr. Addo disclosed that, similar financial and technical support from the Swiss Red Cross in the recent past, had led to the successful implementation of a training programme for several hundreds of Disaster Risk Reduction Volunteers in a number of beneficiary districts. Additionally, he said there had also been an effective roll out of a Maternal, Newborn and Child Health programme resulting from the Swiss support just to mention a few.
Meanwhile the Upper East Regional branch Manager of the GRCS, Mr. Paul Woomah disclosed that, his outfit commissioned a team of consultants to interview
respondents and collect specific data regarding the WASH situation in the Upper
East area some five months ago. The end objective he said, was for the Red Cross to be equipped with accurate information in
order to make a strong case to duty bearers and development partners for the
formulation of appropriate policy decisions to improve WASH indices in the
region.
Mr. Woomah in his welcome address earlier at the start of the validation workshop, disclosed that his outfit did the actual deployment of the data collectors through a hired consultant from 20th May, 2019 through to September 20, 2019. He added that the data collection was limited to six survey districts including Bongo, Binduri, Talensi, Kassena-Nankana Municipal, Nabdam and Pusiga.
Mr. Woomah stated that the main purpose for workshop was to give a unique opportunity for all participating stakeholders to engage with the consultant, discuss the survey findings and to proffer their technical suggestions to enrich the baseline report. He assured that the inputs of all and sundry will be studied and incorporated into the final report for adoption and eventual implementation.
Participants at the stakeholders’ validation came from the six survey districts named earlier and included health directors and staff, education directors and staff, representatives from partner NGOs as well as management staff from the District Assemblies such as directors and planning officers.
