2ND CYCLE SCHOOL HEADS CHARGED TO UPHOLD COVID-19 PROTOCOLS 25th June, 2020
The
Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Tangoba Abayage has given strict directives
to all heads of Senior High Schools [SHS] across the region to uphold the
COVID-19 protocols as well as all other instructions set out for the re-opening
of such schools and the resumption of academic work.
Hon. Tangoba Reg. Min. - Upper East [1st Frm. Right] @ NAVASCO |
Hon.
Tangoba gave the directives this Thursday in separate engagements with
Management of some selected schools and during interactions with students on
the campuses of these schools in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality and the
Builsa North District. The day’s tour marked the second in the series as she
had already in the previous day, paid similar inspection visits to the
Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS and ZAMSTECH both in the Bolgatanga Municipality and the Bolgatanga
SHS in the Talensi District.
Making
her first stop at the Navrongo Senior High School [NAVASCO], the Regional
Minister who is also the Parliamentary Candidate for the Navrongo Central
Constituency on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party in this year’s
general elections, said she was embarking on the tours to check students’
compliance to the laid-down protocols that paved the way for their return to
campus. She said owing to the fact that the Corona Virus was novel and the
world was yet to produce a vaccine, the school authorities could not afford to
compromise on anything as far as the pandemic and academic work was concerned.
The
Minister therefore directed heads of SHSs to send home any student who
deliberately refuses to wear the prescribed nose masks in addition to
contravening other COVID-19 protocols on campus as that will not only endanger the
live of the student in question but also, all other students as well as the
student’s family back home. Walking into
a number of classes to observe the social distancing routines, Madam Tangoba
was impressed and urged the teachers to keep up the good work whilst she
entreated the students to devote precious time to their books as they would be
taking their exams in just a few weeks.
Meanwhile
in a brief to the Minister on her arrival, Headmistress of NAVASCO, Madam Mercy
Babachuweh reported that some 403 students had reported to school and that
academic work had kicked in. She added that the school broadcasts COVID-19 messages
to the student and staff population in 30 minutes intervals as a constant
reminder on keeping safe from contracting the virus. She disclosed the school’s
receipt of Personal Protective Equipment [PPEs] and other logistics to include
3,000 nose masks, 70 pieces of liquid soap, 70 pieces of giant tissues and 14
thermometer guns to help authorities in keeping the pandemic in check on
campus.
The
Headmistress wished Hon. Tangoba well in the December 2020 general elections
and tabled a request before her to push for government to construct a fence wall
for the school stressing that, in its 60 years of existence, NAVASCO has had no
fence to protect its land area from encroachers, ward off uninvited guests and
to keep the students in check.
In
the company of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive Hon. William
Aduum, the Regional Minister set off for her second stop in the day, the Awe
Senior High/Technical School where each member of the team had his/her
temperature checked with thermometer guns before they were led into a meeting
with school authorities. Here also, the
necessary COVID-19 protocols were adhered to.
Headmaster
of the school, Mr. Thomas Kanlisi revealed that, the school expected 866
students back to school but only 221 had so far reported and had started
classes the morning of Thursday while awaiting the arrival of the remainder. As
part of its share of Government’s distribution COVID-19 logistics, the school
received from the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, 40 gallons of liquid
soap, 40 packs of tissues and eight thermometer guns but was yet to get its
consignment of nose masks.
Here,
Hon. Tangoba responded that there may be some transportation challenges but
gave firm assurance that, the deficits will be sorted out quickly so that
everything will run smoothly for the whole term they students will be at school.
She also placed a call to the Regional Manager of the Northern Electricity
Department [NEDCO] there and then, as head of the school complained of the
absence of meters for the school’s electricity consumption leading to a partial
disconnection on the campus. The response was positive much to the relief of
authorities.
The
Regional Minister’s inspection tour ended in the Builsa North District with
stops at the Sandema Senior High/Technical School and the Sandema SHS. The
former had a total of 202 students as of the time of the visit while the latter
had 300 students out of an expected number of 1,000 students. Sandema SHTS
received 40 pieces of tissues, 40 gallons of liquid soap and eight thermometer
guns and no nose masks. Meanwhile, Sandema SHS got 4,236 nose masks, 30 gallons
of liquid soap, six thermometer guns and 30 pieces of tissue.
