The parade was held in the district’s capital, Paga and was themed; “Reflect, Review, Reset”. Ghana’s two major political parties; the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), also took part in the march past, carrying various placards throwing “shade” at each other.
The District Coordinating Director for the KNWD, Mr. Abubakari Amadu stood in as acting district chief executive, receiving the anniversary salute from the marching students. In his speech shortly before the march past began, Mr. Amadu lauded government’s decision at the drastic cutting down on the cost hitherto incurred in the national celebrations of the annual event, emphasizing that this year’s theme reflects “the modesty with which the celebrations were being carried out. The smaller number of participants indicates the ceremony will be shorter without stress on students while Government is set to redirect the saved funds towards enhancing its key policies”.

Mr. Amadu charged school pupils in the district to lead lives that engender hope in the future generation of the country while government works to spur the development of the youth as worthy citizens. He also cautioned residents against haphazard waste disposal as the devastating effects of such unhygienic attitudes can lead of cholera and other dreadful diseases.
He noted for instance that, some districts elsewhere had already been hit with cholera upsurge and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) but states that luckily enough, the district’s health authorities have not recorded any. He advised people to report quickly to the nearest health facilities if symptoms of CSM such as sudden onset of fever of more than 38.5 degrees, neck stiffness and bulging fontanel in infants for prompt medical remedies before things get-out-of-hand.
The Coordinating Director ended his speech with praises on teachers; “to our teachers, you are the unsung heroes molding the next generation of leaders and I urge you to continue doing so with dedication and pride”. But this was his advice to the students: “let me use this opportunity to caution you against indulging in social vices that are inimical to your development – stay off the intake of hard drugs such as tramadol, marijuana and the likes”.
Kassena-Nankana West District Director of Education, Mr. George Bebuga Woyongo in his welcome address earlier remarked that, the 68th Anniversary was not only meant to remind “us of a significant milestone in our nation’s history but also serve as a day we gather together to reflect on our journey as a nation, review our progress and reset our priorities for a brighter future”.

Mr. Woyongo noted that, education is remains the foundation for national development and that, it is the collective responsibility of the larger Ghanaian society to ensure that no child is left behind. Referencing the Anniversary theme; “Reflect, Review, Reset”, he questioned stakeholders in the Kassena-Nankana West District; “how far have we come in providing quality education for our children? Are we equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to compete in a rapidly changing world?” He said all must take an honest look the achievements and challenges over the period; regarding strides in improving access to education, infrastructure, teaching and learning materials, teacher absenteeism and so on.
According to the education director, the review search light must also be thrown on the role of parents, teachers and the community in shaping the future of children in the modern world.
At the close of proceedings for the day, the Zenga Junior High placed first among its peers while the Paga RC Primary School took the top spot in the primary schools category of the march past.
