The District Chief Executive [DCE] for the
Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region, Hon. Stephen Aeke
Akurugo has begun a seven-day stakeholders’ tour to all the seven paramount
traditional areas in the district to hold discussions with the chiefs, their
divisional chiefs and elders as well as interact with youth groups on the best
possible collaborations that could soar the Internally Generated Fund [IGF] of
the Assembly.
Hon. Stephen Akurugo At Mirigu Naba's Palace
Hon. Akurugo began the tour on Tuesday, February 17 and his first point of call was at the palace of the Mirigu Paramount Chief, Naba Anthony Abisa Anonsona Atasige III. He appealed to the chief and traditional council to show keen interest in the revenues emanating from the Mirigu market by assisting to educate his people on the need to honour their taxes and levies to the Assembly. He explained that, central government allocations alone could not meet the development needs of the communities, the reason “we must all work together to generate more for our local peculiar needs and part of which can be allocated back to local authorities including chief and area councils for the execution of community projects”.
He noted that Mirigu as a community may have many expectations from government and disclosed that, so far among other things, a new maternity block with the full compliment of units including a lying-in room, midwife accommodation, delivery room, consulting arena and so on, was being constructed for the area. The DCE reported that, the block had already been roofed, windows fitted while tiling and other finishing works were underway.
Mirigu Naba, speaking his secretary, asked the
DCE to prioritize the construction of a befitting toilet facility and a water
system for the Mirigu market and also see to the expansion of electricity
coverage in the area. He also touched on the poor road network in Mirigu and
appealed for major works on the Mirigu-Navrongo road and other vital roads that
connect Mirigu to other big towns. Naba Atasige’s also informed the DCE of a community
security task-force he had formed and armed the operatives as part of efforts to
reduce the frequent robberies in the are.
Elders Of Mirigu Naba
The DCE also made time of the time out of the visits, to interact with market women and shop owners at the Mirigu market which he inspected their tax receipts while educating them on the relevance of levies and taxes to the development of the district. He equally had some engagements with staff of the Mirigu CHPS Compounds as well as with the headmaster and staff of the Mirigu SHS. In all these engagements, Hon. Akurugo presented several boxes of street lamps to keep the market, CHPS and the school compound, lit at night.
Similar stakeholder engagements took the DCE and his team to the palaces of the Kayoro, Nakong, Chiana, Katiu chiefs and all the other paramountcies while meeting youth groups on the sidelines.
