NOTRE DAME SHS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS May 22, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School which is an all-boys school located in Navrongo in the Upper East region, has formally launched its golden jubilee under the theme “Notre Dame @ 50: The citadel of quality education in Northern Ghana”. Some Catholic missionaries led by Very Rev. Father Arman Lebel established the Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School on 8th July, 1960. Subsequently, 31 students were admitted in September of the same year marking the start of academic work at the school. The Rector of Notre Dame, Father Francis Kodilogo in his report revealed that the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese of the Catholic Church managed the school all the while until in 1990 when financial constraints compelled the authorities to apply for government assistance and thus the school finally got absorbed into the public system in 1996. NaYAD IS BORN May 03, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A non-partisan and non-religious youth group, the Navrongo Youth Agenda for Development [NaYAD] which was formed on December 13, 2009 has been officially inaugurated in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district of the Upper East region. The inauguration was under the theme: “Development, a collective responsibility of all”. The youth group has the overriding goal of collaborating with the district assembly and other key stakeholders to propel development in the area. The group seeks to achieve the above through fostering peace among people in the district, promotion of democracy, accountability and good governance, promotion of education, health, agriculture etc. and the creation of a platform for the youth to realize and utilize their leadership potentials. SECOND OIL AND GAS FORUM IN UPPER EAST April 29, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A public forum to consider suggestions and views of citizens in the Upper East region concerning the management and usage of Ghana ’s oil and gas resources has taken place at Bolgatanga, the regional capital. The forum which was attended by district assembly representatives, opinion leaders, heads of department and the general public is the second to be held in the region since the discovery of oil and related oil resources in the country in 2007. ANGLICAN CHURCH EXPERIENCES STEADY GROWTH April 28, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Anglican Diocese of Tamale whose jurisdiction covers the three Northern regions has experienced a steady growth in its membership over the past two years. The membership of the Anglican faith in the diocese has risen from 3,051 to 3,698 as at today, a difference of 647 over that of the previous two years. The church has also baptised 528 new members as against only 177 during the last two years meanwhile, its confirmations rose from 230 to 448 over the same period. The diocese has an overall membership of over three million. The Bishop of the diocese, Rt. Reverend Emmanuel Anyidana Arongo disclosed these in a charge to the sixth synod of the diocese held at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region. REMOVE INDEMNITY CLAUSE BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM April 20, 2010 A number of citizens in the Bolgatanga Municipality including journalists, students and civil servants have variously called for the removal of the indemnity clause in Ghana ’s 1992 Constitution which has been the country’s supreme law book for the past 16 years. A journalist, Mr. Mohammed Charles Atalanga wondered why the clause protects a former president from prosecution for as long as three or more years after he or she has left office saying this provision seems to support wrong doing as along as a person is able to ascend to the high office of the land. UNDERSTAND BEFORE ANSWERING April 19, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Deputy Upper East regional minister, Honourable Lucy Awuni, has advised basic school candidates currently writing the 2010 Basic Education Certificate Examination [BECE] to first read questions carefully and understand before answering them. Honourable Awuni gave the advice when she and the Acting Regional Director of education, Mrs. Agnes Atagabe visited three out of four exam centres in the Bolgatanga Municipality to see how the BECE candidates were fairing with their exams. The Deputy Regional Minister noted that some candidates often rush to answer questions only to realise mid way that they are on the wrong track. She cautioned candidates not to indulge exam malpractice since the practice will affect them negatively, mar the names of their schools and the region at large. BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM April 14, 2010 ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A number of hard working teachers in the Upper East region teaching in various educational institutions including basic, junior and senior high schools and the two Colleges of education have been rewarded for their efforts in molding the future leaders of Ghana and imparting knowledge to them. The regional best teacher awards event has not been held for the past three years due to non-availability of award prizes. Twelve categories of awards were presented with prizes ranging from 24 inch colour television sets to refrigerators and certificates. This year’s awards ceremony is themed “Teachers motivation for quality education”.
