BOOK SOLD FOR A BULL

The first copy of a book that inspires young girls to rise above abject poverty to achieve academic excellence has been sold for a bull at Navromgo in the Kassena-Nankana district of the Upper East region. Conservative estimates put the price of the bull at GH¢700.

The book, “Kadi- the Barefoot Girl” was bought by Achelisiwine Anyanah, a businessman from Vunania, a suburb of Navrongo.

The unusual sale took place as the book was re-launch at an impressive ceremony in Navrongo during the Kassena-Nankana youth homecoming.

The author of the book, Santuah Niagiah said he wrote “Kadi- the Barefoot Girl” to inspire young children especially girls to greater academic achievements and to prod society to work to assist in making this a reality.

The writer who said he was pleasantly surprised at the atypical sale, the significance of the book being bought in kind signifies a turning point in the way education was being viewed.

Later in an interview, Anyanah, the unique buyer said “education is priceless”. There is nothing that is too precious give in exchange for a good book. He urged children to cultivate the habit of reading and called on the public to stop complaining about falling standards of education and start doing something concrete to help improve the situation.

In his review, the Paramount chief of the Nakong traditional area, Pe Banape Afagachi described “Kadi- the Barefoot Girl” as a excellent piece of literary work that tells the story of a rural poor girl who rose above poverty to attain high levels of formal education. Pe Afagachi who is also an Assistant Directorof education, said the novel is a great source of inspiration to the reader because the author uses the story of Kadi to urge his readers to persevere in order to actualize their dreams.

The Kassena-Nankana DCE, Hon. Emmanuel Chegewe who was the guest speaker said he was touched by the author’s individual effort and promised to procure copies of the book for students throughout the district.

In his closing remarks, the immediate DCE for the assembly, Mr. George Danyare Cholera called on experts to assist translate the book into Kassem and other local languages for educational purposes.
