RAIN STORM HITS NALERIGU-SAKOGU

News Report By – Peter A. Wedam MAY 15, 2009

A severe rain-storm that hit some major towns in the East Mamprusi District on May 14 2009 has destroyed property worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis.

Various landed property including both private and state- owned structures were destroyed in the wake of the storm. In Nalerigu for instance, a market complex yet to be occupied has its roofs blown off.

A warehouse belonging to the former DCE and a beauty saloon were also damaged in the same rain storm.

In Sakogu, another affected town, 60 private houses were destroyed. In this same town, an European Union, EU school block and a church building had their walls and roofs damaged.

However, there were no records of personal injuries and lost of lives in the storm except for only one recorded case of injury at Sakogu.

The rain-storm occurred in the afternoon at which time many residents has gone to their farms.

Last year’s rains brought in their wake floods that swept away several acres of farm lands in the Mamprugu area but it seems this year’s rainy season presents a new twist in disaster management for NADMO.
