The Ghana office of an international nonprofit human rights organisation, AMNESTY International [AIG] is in Bolgatanga for its 6th Biennial General Meeting. AMNESTY International delegates from all the ten regions of Ghana are attending the meeting which is held every two years.

The meeting held that, in close collaboration with like-minded organisations, AMNESTY International has brought progress and change in safe guarding and promoting human rights around the world but a lot more is expected from all stakeholders.

The Upper East Regional representative of AMNESTY International, Mr. Thomas Apana in an interaction with the press said the NGO generally educates people to contact appropriate civil society organisations that fight for human rights whenever there are violations. In addition, AMNESTY International draws the attention of governments, agencies and people in authority to infringement on people’s rights and also gives praise where necessary.

Mr. Apana said AMNESTY also speaks against death penalty as punishment for crimes of high magnitude, force evictions of tenants and demolition of settlements by the state without alternative settlement plans for those affected. Persuading parents to enroll their children in school forms part of the work of this NGO.

A board chairman of AMNESTY International Ghana, Mr. Thomas Dabriyen-Ziem disclosed that the NGO open a country office in Ghana around the 1960s. He stated that his outfit does not enjoy criticising governments and authorities for human rights abuses. It hails favourable environments where the rights of people are respected and sustained at all times.

The last Biennial General Meeting of AMNESTY Ghana was held in Kumasi in 2008.
