This was contained in a press
statement signed and issued by the Upper East Regional Coordinating Director,
Alhaji Mahamadu A. Azonko and copied to all media houses in the region. The
statement disclosed that, the project was estimated to cost the country 750
million US Dollars and targets to augment Ghana’s electricity generation by
adding 60 megawatts of hydro-electricity and 50 megawatts of solar power to the
national grid.
Additionally, the project upon its
completion will develop an irrigation scheme of up to 25,000 hectares as a
boost to the agric economy in the Upper East Region. Meanwhile, the dam will
also serve as a tremendous game changer in flood controls along the White Volta
basin the mostly becomes inundated with annual spillages from the Bagre Dam in
upstream Burkina Faso.
Upper East Regional Minister, Hon.
Tangoba Abayage who is obviously very elated about the eventual actualisation
of this massive project by the government in her region, this Wednesday led a
team of staff from the Volta River Authority and the Chinese contractor to
inspect the site for the impending sod cutting ceremony as well as the area for
the project itself.
According to the Regional Minister, the whole agribusiness value-chain will change for the better for her region's farmer-folk while electricity supply should become very stable to power business set ups and factories in the enclave.
