SIC LIFE DONATES TO UE@50 November 4, 2010 ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The SIC Life Insurance Company in the Upper East region has donated some assorted items and a checque for 1,020.oo Ghana Cedis in aid of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Upper East region. The items included 190 branded note pads, 145 T-shirts, 45 polo shirts and 180 SIC branded pens all valued at 3000 Ghana Cedis. The Regional Manager of SIC Life, Mr. Daniel Gariba said the donation was in response to an appeal made by the Upper East @ 50 planning committee. He said the company has been doing business in the Upper East region for a long time and therefore saw the donation as an opportunity to give back to society. A WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A not-for-profit organisation, Medicine Transparency Alliance [META] in collaboration with the Integrated Social Development Centre has held a sensitisation forum for a cross section of stakeholders to solicit their views and suggestions to enhance its work. META as a civil society organisation seeks to ensure that the general public especially the core poor have access to essential medicines in a transparent manner. The British Department for International Development is the main financier of META’s activities. ITERIM COUNCILS FOR GBEWAA AND BOSCO October 15, 2010 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Upper East regional minister Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, has inaugurated two interim governing councils for both the Gbewaa and St. John Bosco’s Colleges of Education at a brief inaugural ceremony at the residency in Bolgatanga with a call on council members to work hard in helping the colleges to reverse falling standards in education. The regional minister noted that the education reform review committee did indicate government’s resolve to improve teacher education in Ghana and this started with the upgrading of all the 38 teacher training colleges to tertiary status. President Atta Mills has therefore directed that interim governing councils be constituted to fill the managerial vacuum and to enable the colleges to function efficiently. NATIONAL HEALTH PROMOTION LAUNCHED IN UE September13, 2010 BY P. A. WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A national health promotion programme aimed at building strong relations with communities to gain their understanding, support and involvement in the implementation of health promotion interventions has been launched at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region. The health promotion programme is the brainchild of the Ministry of Health and a private sector investor, Better Ghana Management Services Limited [BGMSL]. The programme will make use of School of Hygiene graduates referred to as health promotion officers and assistants whose knowledge will provide the needed capacity building for communities to make healthy choices such as eating fruits daily, reducing quantity of meat and sugar they eat and the addition of more vegetables to food. A WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Upper East regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo has stated that government is poised to achieving the Millennium Development Goals in the road sector. In this regard, a number of contracts have been awarded for various works on roads in the Upper East region. The regional minister was speaking during the regional hosting of the meet-the-press series held in Bolgatanga. In a presentation dubbed the state of the Upper East region, Mr. Woyongo noted that over the past 20 months that National Democratic Congress assumed power, it has commenced and completed spot improvement works on 79 kilometres of road and reshaped 184 kilometres of feeder roads. A further reshaping of 125 kilometres of road and surfacing of 14.4 kilometres is on-going. WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission [FWSC], Mr. George Smith Graham has advised public sector workers to ignore some salary structures being circulated especially within the civil service adding that those documents in circulation do not represent the official Single Spine Salary Structure being formulated by the commission. He wondered why selfish people can circulate illegal documents alongside official documents just to misinform workers and to create the impression that the Single Spine Salary Structure is inferior to some existing salary structures. The chief executive officer was addressing public sector workers at an interface meeting in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region.
