LAWYER AKUGRE FOR PNC PRIMARIES DECEMBER 24, 2010 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A 37-year old lawyer, Mr. Rockson Akugre has declared his intention to contest the primaries of the People’s National Convention [PNC] in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency of the Upper East region. He has been a loyal party man occupying some key positions including ward secretary for Tindonmolgo and regional organiser for the PNC from 2003 to 2006. At a press conference in Bolgatanga to officially declare his intent, Lawyer Akugre remarked that the Bolgatanga Central Constituency is beset with a host of difficulties such as high poverty levels which manifest in people’s inability to access potable water, quality medical care while poor housing and sanitary conditions also stare the people in the face. GARU-TEMPANE INCREASES IGF December 23, 2010 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Garu-Tempane district in the Upper East region has realised a significant increase in its revenue mobilisation drive as a result of prudent measures adopted by the leadership of the assembly. Consequently, the assembly’s revenue of GH ¢279,193.53 in 2009 rose to GH ¢332,999.29 in 2010. The District Chief Executive, Honourbale David Adakudugu made this known during a meet-the-press programme organised by the assembly in Garu. Honourable Adakudugu said upon assumption of office, he and his technocrats caused the registration and collection of property rates for the establishment of telecommunication masts, constituted revenue task forces, blocked loop holes in revenue collection while dishonest collectors were replaced and this led to massive gains in revenues. AMNESTY International delegates from all the ten regions of Ghana are attending the meeting which is held every two years. The meeting held that, in close collaboration with like-minded organisations, AMNESTY International has brought progress and change in safe guarding and promoting human rights around the world but a lot more is expected from all stakeholders. WORK COMMENCES ON NAVRONGO-TUMU ROAD December 14, 2010 BY P. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Roads and Highways Minister, Honourble Joe Kwashie Gidisu has cut the sod for the commencement of work on the 25 - kilometres Navrongo-Tumu road. The road which has remained untarred and dusty for many years links the Upper East and Upper West regions as well as connects Ghana to neighbouring Cote d’ Ivoire and Togo. At the sod cutting ceremony held at Nakong in the Kassena-Nankana West district of the Upper East region, Hon. Gidisu disclosed that the reconstruction works awarded at the cost 29.9 million Ghanaian Cedis will involve the construction of a single lane road with primer seal and double seal surfacing, u-drains, pipe culverts and box culverts. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Minister for Education, Honourable Alex Tettey-Enyo has stated that government recognises the contribution of the Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School to the human resource development of Ghana and urged staff of the school to sustain the high standard of teaching and discipline. He also advised students of the school to distant themselves from hard drugs, cyber fraud and other social vices that can jeopardize their lives and academic work. The Education Minister gave the advice in an address at a grand durbar to climax the golden jubilee celebrations of Notre Dame Seminary Senior High School in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district.
