DRUG TRAFFICKING AND ABUSE ENDANGERS HEALTH AND SECURITY June 27, 2011 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD – BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon has observed that drug trafficking which was largely viewed as a social and criminal problem, has transformed in recent times into a major threat to health and security in countries and the world as whole. The UN Boss made this observation in a keynote address read for him at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region to mark the 2011 “International Day against Drug abuse and illicit trafficking”. In the address read by the National Director of Social Welfare, Mr. Stephen T. NEW YOUTH GROUP BORN IN UPPER EAST June 18, 2011 BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL A new youth group christened the Upper East Youth Association [UEYA] has been inaugurated at Bolgatanga with the core aims and objectives of influencing policies for the total development of the region, mobilising and building the capacity of young people and to recognise and support effective leadership in the Upper East region. The association has the motto: “Development Is Our Concern” The UEYA which is a non-partisan and non-profit making organisation also seeks to foster unity among the youth of the Upper East region, demand accountability and transparency from duty bearers, promote investment and entrepreneurship and to discourage the youth from indulging in substance abuse. TEACHERS URGED TO ESCHEW ABSENTEEISM

BY PETER ATOGEWE WEDAM June 11, 2011 ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL The Minister of Education, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu has called on teachers to eschew absenteeism, frequent lateness and other practices which tend to affect effective teaching and learning in schools. The minister made the call in an address she delivered at the second congregation of the Gbewaa College of Education held in Pusiga, a suburb of the Bawku Municipality. The minister was in the Upper East region for a three-day working visit during which she paid courtesy calls on some chiefs and inspected several ongoing educational infrastructure at various senior high schools. Ayagle Is New Mce For Bolgatanga Friday, 27 May 2011 09:12 A former National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director in charge of the Bolgatanga Municipality, Mr. Edward Ayiriba Ayagle has been confirmed as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East region. He was nominated by President John Atta Mills a fort night ago following the relief of the former MCE. In a “Yes” or “No” vote supervised by the Electoral Commission, Mr. Ayagle pulled 48 “Yes” votes against eight “No” votes to secure the confirmation. The figure represents 84.6 per cent of 52 valid votes cast with one honourable member being absent out of the total assembly membership of 55 which includes the MCE and the Member of Parliament who has no voting rights. ATOGEWE WEDAM ISD-BOLGATANGA MUNICIPAL Honourable Hanna Tetteh, the Minister of Trade and Industry has stated that the role of government is to create a favourable business environment for private sector growth and competitiveness which will lead to increased domestic and international trade. She said with this in mind, the National Democratic Congress government is implementing policies to purposefully eliminate poverty, social deprivation and economic injustice from the Ghanaian society. The minister was delivering an address to open the 2011 Clients’ Exhibition and Trade Show organised by the Rural Enterprises Project [REP] under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. This year’s event is being held in Navrongo, capital of the Kassena-Nankana East district. The trade show which will promote inter-district trade and foster regional and national trade relations will run for one week. A
