THE NORTHERN REGIONS DESERVE COVERAGE

It is woeful to note that the northern regions of Ghana – Upper East, Upper West and Northern are like a capture audience always waiting to hit by news from the omnipotent state-owned broadcaster GBC regional radio stations and its TV network, GTV for it is the only television station accessible to people in these regions.

Media decentralization especially on the part of the electronic audio-visual media like TV3, Metro TV and TV Africa is yet to be realized in the north.

Now we are in the information age, it is very sad that some parts of the country [Ghana] such as the three northern regions are still lagging behind in the reception of various news items bothering on topical issues that affect the everyday life of the citizens in this beloved country. The transmissions of other new TV stations including the three named above simply do not reach the northern regions.

I therefore appeal to authorities concerned to build sub-transmission stations in the three regions of the north to disseminate their news bulletins and other developmental programmes to people in these parts of Ghana. Other investors in the silver screen industry can also venture into establishing TV stations in the north to serve the special needs of these areas.

T he print media are not left out in this respect. Considering the number of newspapers that operate and circulate their publications in the south of the country, I can say for now that there is a high percentage of print media blackout in the north of Ghana.

The dailies such as Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times which are circulated daily from Mondays to Saturdays in the south of the country like Accra and Kumasi get to the north a day later. Thus what is news to Ghanaians in the south arrives as “history” to those in the country’s northern regions.
