The East Mamprusi district office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, CHRAJ recorded only 13 cases in the whole of 2008. The cases included domestic violence, paternity complains and child maintenance.

The district director of CHRAJ, Mr. Sulley Sawyer Salifu who disclosed this to the information services department in an interview at Gambaga indicated that paternity complains and domestic violence dominated in the total of cases received.

The director said the few cases received could either be attributed to the fact that education has gone down well with the people or that they are using alternative methods to resolve their human rights problems.

Mr. Sulley said of the 13 cases, his office was able to resolve 10, transferred two to a family tribunal at Nalerigu and the domestic violence and victim support unit of the Ghana Police service respectively whilst one is pending.

The CHRAJ boss noted that the cases were mostly filed against men because many of these men feel superior over woman and often molest their wives as a show of their might. He also attributed violence against women to the fact that society over the years has downplayed the women and presented her as an underdog.

He said CHRAJ carried out awareness and educational campaigns in close to 30 communities during 2008. The campaigns were on female genital mutilation domestic violence and economic, social and cultural rights.

Five months into 2009, CHRAJ has already received six cases at its Gambaga office. Mr. Sulley however says his office will soon go on a vigorous campaign to ensure that people adhere to safeguarding human rights.

The CHRAJ office Gambaga has only one motor bike as an official vehicle for its daily routines. This Mr. Sulley observes is hampering the efficient operations of CHRAJ.

He expressed the hope that the national offices of CHRAJ will create a separate office for the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District so as to shed off the work load on the East Mamprusi District office.
