The Principal of St. Bosco’s College of Education in Navrongo, Mr. Alfred Ndago has stated that the college is increasingly conscious of the need to equip teacher trainees with appropriate skills to enable them function effectively in their various schools.

The Principal made the statement in a speech during the college’s first congregation since it was given the mandate to run a Diploma in Basic Education Programme in 2004 by the National Accreditations Board. A total of 926 students comprising 654 fulltime students and 272 serving teachers under a Sandwich programme graduated after successfully passing prescribed exams.

Mr. Ndago noted that for the past decade, not a single student riot has been recorded saying strategic internal structures instituted by the administration has ensured cordial relations between students and staff.

According to Mr. Ndago, about 24 senior staff of the college have no official accommodation and this negatively affects recruitment and retention of adequate staff. Also, the college’s roads are untarred and dusty while dormitory facilities for both male and female students are woefully inadequate.

He called on government to give the college immediate and urgent attention in all its areas of need in order for it to catch up with its sister colleges of education.

The Vice President of Ghana, Mr. John Dramani Mahama in a keynote address noted that a well educated population can contribute significantly to the country’s development. He said it is against this background that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government since assumption of power in 2009 is using education as a tool to implementing and accelerating the development policies and programmes of the nation.

Vice President Mahama revealed that government’s priority has been the implementation of a strategic education plan that seeks among many things to address challenges in management, structure and content of education to conform to modern trends.

He further disclosed that teachers in rural areas pursuing distance education programmes will benefit from a 100 Ghana Cedi government subsidy annually while Science and Mathematics teachers will continue to enjoy three incremental credits on their respective ranks.

Mr. Mahama observed that indiscipline has spelled the doom for many educational institutions and commended the principal, his staff and the Catholic Church for instilling maximum discipline in the school which has led to the production of thousands of well-behaved, God fearing and dedicated teachers over the years.

Upper East Regional Minister, Honourable Mark Owen Woyongo in a speech said his office is aware of the problems facing the school and has accordingly instituted measures to solve them. For instance, he disclosed that a contract has been awarded a few months ago for the construction of a bungalow for the principal.

Honourable Woyongo also said work will start in the next few weeks on a three-story block to house tutors of the school. He expressed optimism that by the end of the first term of the NDC in office, all problems affecting the Bosco’s College of Education would have been considerably solved.

He revealed that within the last 11 months, close to 20 second cycle educational institutions in the region have benefited from various types of infrastructural development and this will continue as it is the commitment of government to ensure that educational institutions do not lack anything that will enhance their work.
