The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo has stated that government is placing the youth at the core of its policy initiatives in order to restore hope in them. The minister was speaking at the Upper East regional launch of the Information Communication Technology [ICT] module of the National Youth Employment Programme [NYEP].

Mr. Woyongo who launched the ICT module of the NYEP under the theme “Employment for the youth- towards a better Ghana” said the National Democratic Congress [NDC] government is investing in the youth through the creation of sustainable opportunities that will be beneficial to them and also fill them with the sense of belonging to the better Ghana agenda.

He commended rLG Communications, a Ghanaian-owned mobile phone company for partnering government in implementing the ICT module which has created jobs for thousands of young people through technological based learning.

The regional minister observed that the introduction of the ICT into Ghana has made significant contribution towards the socio-economic development of the country. He urged the youth to embrace ICT training saying “nothing is more important than the ability to communicate effectively”.

According to Mr. Woyongo, government plans to engage 100,000 youth under the NYEP this year with emphasis on the trades and vocational module, mobile phone repairs and assembling module and other new modules. Furthermore, government in conjunction with Voluntary Services Overseas, a British NGO will organise voluntary work camps for over 20,000 youth to promote local volunteering in efforts aimed at national development.

The Chief Operations officer of rLG Communications Mr. Fred Adetola, in welcome address noted that any development programmed that does not use ICT is bound to fail. He said rLG Communications as an innovative ICT firm, is focused on creating jobs for Ghanaian youth and this focus has driven it to partner government through the NYEP.

Mr. Adetola said with over 12 million Ghanaians using mobile phones, government and her development partners including the private sector have a huge opportunity to fight poverty and hunger. He disclosed that by the end of March 2010, his outfit will put up a state-of-the-art assembling plant which will permanently absorb an estimated 20,000 youth under the NYEP.

The Chief Operations Officer called on telecommunications network operators to patronise the rLG brand of phones in order to enhance activation on their networks since the bran has already received major endorsement in Asia and African countries.

The Upper East Regional co-ordinator of the NYEP, Mr. James Kojo Kopanamo who spoke on behalf of the national co-ordinator, Mr. Abuga Pele emphasised that the NYEP is a government basically aimed at providing jobs for the many unemployed youth in the country and thanked private entrepreneurs like rLG Communications for supporting government’s efforts. He called on other entities to partner government in creating jobs.

Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Epsona Harry Ayamga noted that when there are healthy partnerships between the state and private sector, the former can tap financial, human and technical expertise from the latter thereby freeing state resources for other equally important uses.
