Trust and confidence building are essential ingredients in finding lasting solutions to the protracted Bawku conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis. The Upper East regional minister, Honourable Mark Owen Woyongo made this observation during a special Friday Muslim prayer session held at the residency for peace in Bawku.

The regional minister further observed that the warring factions have over the years lost trust and confidence in the security agencies, the law courts and the Attorney General to impartially handle cases involving perpetrators of mayhem in the Bawku Municipality and its environs.

According to Honourable Woyongo, everything must be done to restore trust and confidence in the system if lasting peace is to return to Bawku. He said all that have a stake in the peace building process ought to be very neutral in their work and indeed exhibit a great deal of impartiality in taking decisions and law enforcement.

He disclosed that he has earlier in the week met all judges in the region, the security and the attorney general and impressed upon them to conduct themselves professionally in their handling of issues relating to the Bawku conflict. He urged the law courts and judges to avoid undue delays in passing judgment saying “justice delayed is justice denied”. He said the police must also investigate cases with dispatch providing the necessary evidence for the prosecutions to take place.

Honourable Woyongo also appreciated the contributions of various religious bodies to the Bawku peace process. He particularly thanked the Upper East regional Chief Imam and his elders for putting together the special prayer session in aid of finding peace in Bawku.

The Upper East regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yusif Adam led the Muslim prayer delegation to the residency. The delegation included district Chief Imams from Navrongo, Zebila, Paga,Bawku and Sandema with other Muslim elders in attendance.

Meanwhile, the Regional Security Co-ordinator Mr. W.Y. Kadollah and the Deputy Upper East regional minister, Madam Lucy Awuni together with Honourable Woyongo received the delegation.
