The Vice President of Ghana, Mr. John Dramani Mahama has observed that the University for Development Studies (UDS) experienced massive transformation both in curriculum and infrastructure since the late Professor John B.K. Kaburise assumed office as Vice Chancellor in April 2008.

The Vice President who made the observation in tribute to the late professor at a funeral mass held in the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Catholic Basilica in Navrongo, said the professor’s sterling leadership qualities strategically positioned the UDS and led it to its present state.

He said the late Professor Kaburise upon assuming office, first developed a five-year development plan spanning from 2003 to 2008. He then opened the Faculty for Integrated Studies at Wa in the Upper West region, transferred the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies from Tamale to Navrongo while ensuring gender equity in all programmes.

Vice President John Mahama said Ghana has lost a very prominent son as he described the late professor as a man with knowledge in all disciplines and with vast exposure as he taught law among others in several Universities across the world including University of Lesotho, Papua New Guinea, Pennsylvania and Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mahama in the company of Upper East Regional Minister, Honournable Mark Woyongo and other government officials laid a reef on the professor’s tomb on behalf of the government and people of Ghana. He also presented 20 cartons of bear, 10 cartons of soft drinks and 3000 Ghanaian Cedis to the bereaved family.

The late Professor B.K. Kaburise was born on 5th December 1949 at Bibiani in the Western Region of Ghana. He attended some of the best schools in the country from Notre Dame Seminary Secondary in Navrongo to Achimota and the University of Ghana, Legon in Accra. He later went traveled out of the country in search of higher education and this led him to the world’s classic universities including University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1972 to 1973.

The late Professor Kaburise who won numerous academic awards and published many books also had a stint with the political landscape of Ghana. He contested for the primaries to lead the New Patriotic Party [NPP] in the 2008 parliamentary elections but lost. He passed away on December 09, 2009 at his hometown, Navrongo in the Upper East Region at age 60 years.
