The official launch of the 50th Anniversary of the Upper East Region has taken place at Bolgatanga, capital of the region with the unveiling of a website christened www.uppereastregionghana.com which is aimed at marketing the region to the outside world and attracting investors to propel the development of the region.

The Upper East Region was begotten from the Northern Region in September 1960 and it in turn gave birth to the Upper West Region in 1983. Since its creation, a total of 25 political appointees have headed the administration of the Upper East region either as regional chief executives, regional commissioners or regional ministers depending on the regime that was in power.

Upper East Regional minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo who launched the anniversary under the theme “Upper East @ 50- Harnessing our endowed resources for accelerated development through education” said the website also contains other scheduled activities marking the year-long anniversary while it will serve as an avenue for businesses in the region to advertise their goods and services to a larger market on line.

The Regional Minister noted that the historical linkage and relations with the Northern and Upper West regions over the past 50 years cannot be thrown to the background thus citizens from these two regions will be involved in activities such as football matches between Kassenas and Sissalas, Dagaabas and Frafras and many others to further cement their friendship.

He said prior among the objectives of the anniversary is to highlight the achievements of the region since its creation, market its potentials to attract investors, expose the rich cultural and tourist attractions to the outside world and foster unity and peaceful co-existence among the people. Also, major development projects will be undertaken to commemorate the anniversary of the region.

Mr. Woyongo disclosed that government has given approval for the rehabilitation of some roads, provision and extension of street lights for the Bolgatanga Municipality and renovation of selected government buildings all aimed at giving the region a facelift. Meanwhile, as part of the launch, Mr. Woyongo cut the sod for the construction of a policy-clinic to augment the work of the Bolgatanga regional hospital.

The regional minister called on all sons and daughters living within and without the Upper East Region to contribute generously as well as sponsor some of the programmes of activities lined up for the year. On its own, the Regional Co-ordinating Council in collaboration with the Upper East@50 Planning Committee will embark on fund raising activities, roll out a raffle draw and also levy district assemblies to fund anniversary activities.

In a solidarity message, the Upper West regional minister, Mr. Mahmud Khaleed noted that but for the efforts of former president Jerry John Rawlings who spearheaded the creation of the Upper West region from Upper East, the former would not have had any phenomenal development.

Mr. Mahmud Khaleed entreated chiefs in the three Northern regions to ensure that peace is maintained in their localities all the time since peace is prerequisite for any form of development.

Also, the Northern Regional minister, Honourable Moses Magbengba in a similar message noted that after its creation from the Northern region in 1960, the Upper East region attained the age of 23 years before also giving birth to the Upper West region. Translating this to human life, he said it is unacceptable for young girls below 20 years to begin producing children saying the practice leads to health complications and malnourishment for both mother and child respectively.

He urged parents to monitor their wards carefully especially the girls and only give them out for marriage when they are properly matured and become of age.

The security agencies, heads of department and educational institutions, chiefs, political party representatives, religious bodies and the general public attended the launching ceremony.
