COLLEGES BATTLE FOR SPORTS HONOURS April 06, 2010

All seven colleges of education in the three regions of the north have converged at the St. John Bosco’s College of Education in Navrongo in the Upper East region to compete for honours in their biannual sports festival. This year’s event marks the ninth Northern Colleges of Education sports festival with the last one held in Wa two years ago.
The Principal of the St. John Bosco’s College of Education, Mr. Alfred Abugre Ndago in a welcome address observed that any meaningful development of the youth must take into consideration three basic constructs that is mental, physical and psychosocial education.
Mr. Ndago said there is no substitute for sports that is why educational institutions must have a meaningful package of physical education, recreational and sports programmes to afford the youth an opportunity to undertake physical activities which translates into higher productivity and better life expectancy.
He noted however that, the colleges are not able to organise the sports festival regularly as a result of insufficient finances. Also, curricular changes in the colleges leave very little time for teacher trainees to play sports.
The principal advised the various competing colleges to be tolerant, obedient and abide by the rules of all the games adding that no sports man can achieve success by disregarding conduct guide lines in specific sports disciplines. He also asked competitors not to use performance enhancing drugs saying these have their own negative effects on users.
Mr. Ndago called on the teacher trainees to use the games to create new friendships and also strengthen already existing bonds between themselves and between their schools. He appealed to the visiting colleges to use his school’s property with utmost care.
In an address to officially open the sports festival, Upper East regional minister Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo noted that sports especially football is dearest to the hearts of most Ghanaians and this unites them without regard for ethnicity, culture, religious and political affections.
Mr. Woyongo stated that the underlying key principles of all sports competitions is loyal participation and healthy rivalry. He therefore urged the competitors to use the sports festival to develop healthy values such as diligence, commitment and perseverance which are necessary ingredients for academic and sports excellence.
The regional minister observed that good officiating largely determines the success of sports festivals and urged the match and other officials to be guided by the officials’ oath. He also advised the winners in various sports disciplines to avoid provocative celebrations so as not to anger their losing counterparts.
The kick off match fixed the host, St. John Bosco’s College of Education against Nusrat Jahan College of Education from Wa. The sports festival ends on April 09, 2010.
