The Upper East regional minister Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, has inaugurated two interim governing councils for both the Gbewaa and St. John Bosco’s Colleges of Education at a brief inaugural ceremony at the residency in Bolgatanga with a call on council members to work hard in helping the colleges to reverse falling standards in education.

The regional minister noted that the education reform review committee did indicate government’s resolve to improve teacher education in Ghana and this started with the upgrading of all the 38 teacher training colleges to tertiary status. President Atta Mills has therefore directed that interim governing councils be constituted to fill the managerial vacuum and to enable the colleges to function efficiently.

Mr. Woyongo said among other functions, the councils will oversee the internal organisation of the colleges, be responsible for the discipline of staff and students, prescribe the terms and conditions for admission of students and also manage the finances and fixed assets of their respective colleges.

He charged the councils to render dedicated and selfless service to the colleges of education in order to uplift their image.
The Principal for the St. John Bosco’s College of Education, Mr. Alfred Abugre Ndago on behalf of the interim governing councils observed that the colleges encounter lots of obstacles in delivering their mandate of producing quality teachers for basic schools some of these being inadequate infrastructure and non-motivation of staff.

Mr. Ndago who is also the president of the Principals Conference disclosed that an average of 9000 teachers come out of the colleges annually noting that, not all of this number goes to the classroom. As a result, about 33,000 classrooms nationwide are without qualified teachers. He therefore appealed to the regional coordinating council to support the colleges at all times to ensure that they do not fall short in delivering their mandate to the nation.

A State Attorney with the Attorney Generals’ Department, Mr. Obobi Samuel administered the oath of office and allegiance to the two interim governing councils. Monsignor Thomas Anamooh is the chairman of the council for the St. John Bosco’s College of Education whilst Hajia Laadi Ayamba chairs that for the Gbewaa College of Education. Each council comprises 13 members.
